MUMBAI-GOA TRAIN TRAVEL OPTIONS

Many travellers are stuck in Mumbai for want of a train to Goa. The most popular train seems to be the night train. Talking to many, it appears that they feel this is the only train to Goa from Mumbai – amazing!

I have met many travellers in Mumbai wringing their hands and either taking a bus to Goa ( night bus – very uncomfortable, bad road) or just staying an extra day with the high costs of Mumbai.

Well, a thorough perusal of the Railway timetable suggests that there are many trains from Mumbai or near Mumbai to Goa. Many of them are actually day trains down the beautiful new Konkan Railway.

Trains to Goa depart from :
From Mumbai VT or CST i.e Chattrapati Shivaji Terminus

Kurla ( 7km from CST or VT) - take a local from VT to Kurla

From Panvel – A local train from Mumbai VT to Panvel.

From Pune to Goa – take any train down to Pune from VT 3.5 hrs to 4.5 hrs depending on the train – you can also take a cab.

Here is a comprehensive solution.

A) FROM MUMBAI VT

2.50 hrs 0111 Kanya Express arrives Margao ( Goa) at 10.45 am morning
07.05 hrs 0103 Mandvi Express arrives Margao at 1825 hrs evening

b) FROM LOKMANYA TILAK STATION or Kurla Station ( 7 kms for Mumbai VT ) to Margao – take a local from VT to Kurla

0535hrs 2051 Jan Shatabdi Express arrives Madgaon 13.30 hrs afternoon ( except WED)
1145 hrs 6345 Netravati Express arrives Madgaon at 2220 hrs in the night
1420 hrs 2619 Matsyagandha Express arrives Madgaon at 0630 early morning

C) FROM PANVEL

If none of these trains are available go down to panvel ( 68 Kms from Mumbai) – 1 hr 15 mins BY LOCAL TRAIN or take a bus from Dadar. WARNING – This is Table 26 in the Railway timetable – check the website or confirm if the days change ( basically there seems to be one of the long distance trains passing by every day)

1120hrs 2618 Lakshwadeep Express arrival Madgaon at 2045 in the night

2235hrs 6335 Nagercoil Express arr Madgaon at 0725hrs morning( TUE ONLY)

2235hrs 6333 Hapa Trivandrum Express arr Madgaon 0725 morning ( SATonly)

2235hrs 6337 Okha Ernakulam Express arr Madgaon 0725 morning( TUE,SUN ONLY)

0517hrs 2978 Jaipur Ernakulam Express arr Madgaon 1420 hrs afternoon ( SUN ONLY)

0517hrs 2432 Nizamuddin Trivandrum Rajdhani Express arr Madgaon 12.20 afternoon ( TUE AND THU ONLY) – expensive tickets.

D) FROM PUNE

FINALLY IF NOTHING WORKS and you still want a train GO DOWN TO PUNE i.e 3.5 hrs to 4.5 hrs by any train or cab( book the ticket in Mumbai itself) ; spend the day at the splendid Sinhagad Fort over there and Shaniwar Wada and then

1710 hrs 2780 Nizamudding Goa Express arr Vasco da Gama( Goa) 0745 hrs.
2310 hrs 1097 Pune Ernakulam Express arr Madgaon 1310 hrs ( MON ONLY)

Okay – anyone taken the day trains – how is the landscape ?
 

 I might recomend Kurla 11:45 am - Palolem 11.45pm,palolem-gokarna-11:20am on.
 

 your right that is 11:45 am daily. The reason i mention it is 1. you won't need a reservation for this train, just go!

2. It arrives a palolem stationaround 11:00 pm, so you can just go the beach, find a hut and get some sleep, or not...
