One of the most common transportation means in India is the three wheeled autorickshaw, called auto . Ubiquitous, it comes with an autorickshaw driver who can be a source of amusement, information, fun and sometimes unwanted trouble.

The fare for a journey has to be negotiated. Fix this in advance before climbing on. DO NOT PAY MORE THAN 4-6 RUPEES A KM ANYWHERE IN INDIA. This will ensure that you pay a fair rate.

All newcomers to a city and this includes Indians have to learn the auto rate in a city. Ensure that you speak to a few locals and get this information. Be aware though that it takes a little time.

A tip - look up a map ; calculate the kilometers and you have a rough idea. Cross check with the nearest person before speaking to the autorickshaw driver.

In Bangalore and Pune, autorickshaws are fixed fare ones and have a meter. Sometimes the meter reading has to be converted into the exact fare using a small chart that the autodriver will have.

The suburbs of Mumbai, too have autos with meters.

If you are happy with your driver tip him well 10 to 20 rupees goes a long way for him; but make it clear that it is because he is honest.

Do not pay Rs 400 for a Rs 100 trip and yes, if in your fare negotiation you are still on your learning curve, well Indians in new cities go through the same experience till they master it. Many do not grudge the extra fifty cents paid ; it means a lot to a poor autodriver!

Businessmen understand that autos are the first point of contact with travelers. They often tip autos if they bring a tourist to their shop. 

Thus, you can be sure that autodrivers will often ask you if you wish to shop or you need a better hotel. This is an advantage sometimes because a good auto driver can guide you quickly to the best shop in the city as also the hotel that is offering the best rates. But negotiate when you get there.

If you do not need these facilities, say no firmly. The rotten apples among the auto drivers are very insistent to the point of being rude. Just step off the auto and clear the bill.

Auto drivers are a good source of local information. They can tell you about the city , cinemas, restaurants and parks. Like any good cabbie in any country they have a lot of information. The autodrivers are happy to share some of this with you. Do not hesitate to ask. If you get good information a ten rupee tip will bring smiles to his face.
