FIRST DAY IS NOT LIKE THE FIRST DATE , OR IS IT ?

Glimpses of India

FIRST DAY

Many prefer to travel straight from a metro to another destination – just a trip to the railway station and a train journey – your first day awaits you at your new destination.

On your first day out you are going to get a strong feeling of being in a strange world. Especially if it is the first time you are in India or come from countries that do not have any kind of a street life anymore.

The streets will be full of people, traffic is going to be madly disorganized from your point of view, crossing the street without a stop light ; avoiding the cycles and autos as they swirl round you will bring you alive!

It is both exciting and sometimes horrifying when you see for example the procession of a dead body being taken out for cremation. The sight of a beggar unnerves some, gives some food for thought and leaves many stunned.

MEETING PEOPLE

About half a dozen people will want to strike a conversation with you – where are you from ? what do you do ? why are you here ? what is your name ? do you have family ? why are you traveling alone ? and so on…

Smile , give polite answers and move on . If the person wishes to meet you later – upto you. While many may advocate that you do not meet these people later on, it is also possible that you make your first friends. The people to avoid are the businessmen wanting to sell you something. For them business will always come first , friendship last. For the others it is the other way around.

The ubiquitous autorickshaw driver will recognize you as a newbie and immediately offer to show you the best of the city – take a tourism department guided tour, instead.

WHAT TO DO

Step out of the hotel , go for a fifteen minute walk to the nearest chai shop( tea shop) ,have tea and come back to the hotel.

Step out , go to the nearest shop and pick up some basic things mentioned elsewhere in the website.

Step out with a landmark in mind , hire an auto ( four to six rupees a kilometer) go there come back and relax.

If the city you find yourself in has a guided tour of the city , take an auto to the departure point of this bus and do the tour. You will meet some friendly Indians, get to talk to them , get used to the city and country and come back peacefully.

Have lunch , relax and carry on with your next leg of journey.
