CASH AND TRAVELLERS CHEQUES

US dollar rules in India like everywhere else. However, the Euro, the British pound are first among equals as far as ease of changing is concerned. Middle Eastern currencies are also easily changed.

One can change money at many private chains of moneychangers. Most government and private banks also change foreign currency. 

It is recommended that you keep eighty percent of your money in travellers cheques for safety reason. To change travellers cheques you need to show your passport.

After changing foreign currency store the receipt you get. When returning to your country , you can change your surplus rupees to your currency on showing these receipts. You cannot convert back more than what you have converted to local currency. These certificates are required for an income tax clearance if you stay long in the country,too. CREDIT CARDS

Overseas credit cards are widely accepted in restaurants, hotels and many shops. There would be a service charge for foreign currency conversion depending on your card issuer. Check with them.  Usually it is not more than two percent. 

We recommend that you use your credit cards in restaurants and hotels for convenience. It saves you frequent trips to the moneychangers.

Globalization in this respect has come to the point that using a credit card in India is the same as overseas.

CASH FROM CREDIT CARDS AND ATM’S

You can use your foreign credit cards to withdraw cash at many ATM’s. Sometimes you have to go to a bank to withdraw cash.

WIRE TRANSFER

Banks can accept a wire transfer on your behalf - it is a complicated procedure. ANYONE WITH EXPERIENCE ON THIS  - MAIL US PLEASE-

Western Union has many locations in India and almost all cities in India now have a post office where this Western Union wire transfer can be picked up against a picture id – usually a passport. It is expensive though. 16 percent commission, but does arrive in 2 hours.
