Where to do a medical elective in India ?
Medical Elective India
I'm looking to do my medical elective for 6-8 weeks in India Dec '03-
Jan '04. I'd like to spend about 4 weeks in a large city (teaching)
hospital, followed by another 2-4 weeks in a rural community health
centre. However, I'm completely stumped by the enormity of the country
and am not quite sure how to start.
My questions are: - How can I find contact details of teaching hospitals/ medical schools in India? - What regions would be particularly interesting to work in a community health setting, and how might I make some contacts to do this? - How difficult is it to get around/ communicate with people speaking only English (esp with doctors and patients)? Any replies welcome! |

4. this is
an interesting exercise. Why choose India ? Will your study be
recognized ? Are you sure an Indian hospital will allow you to take up
the work of their students? does your country have reciprocal
arrangements for Indian students?

A medical elective is like work experience that you do just before your
final year. You can do it anywhere in any field - all you need is a
doctor to supervise you. It can range from just watching what they do to
acting as an extra pair of hands (obviously depending on the place and
what they're doing). For us, it's compulsory but not marked, therefore
I'm not looking for a place to do recognised study. However I ask about
teaching hospitals (ie ones attached to medical schools) as they are
more likely to take elective students because both the doctors and the
patients are used to having them around (and because I'd like the
opportunity to meet my Indian counterparts!).
As far as them letting me, I've heard of many Aussie students doing electives in India with no problem. Equally, there would be no problems for Indian students doing theirs here provided they have offical letters etc from their university and apply enough in advance. Students from almost every med school in the world do electives every year so it's pretty well-known thing amongst doctors and hospitals everywhere. Hope that answers your questions! |

I recommend that you study ayurveda and traditional medicines in India.
Perhaps yoga and meditation, too. This is medicine that you would not
study in your course in Australia. Some of these concepts and ideas will
be new to you and you can considering implementing them eventually.
Watching Indian doctors at work would not teach you more - at best give a comparative analysis and perhaps exposure to some diseases that you do not have in your own country but that are present here. PM me for more if you wish. http://www.oocities.org/webyatra - best website on india for travel faq |
