WHY BUSES

Buses offer unparalleled opportunity to come in contact with local people ( who are not businessmen) and also travel some exquisite landscapes and beautiful drives. A trip to the local dhaba( roadside travellers restaurant) is as much a part of the culture as exchanging pleasantries with local folks on the bus.

The buses are very inexpensive and for a one hour to five hour journey, buses are better value than a car and often have better frequency than trains. Eg three hour journey is Rs 70 to 120 by bus and perhaps Rs 1800 by car.

South India for example is best covered by buses alone with the next tourist attraction but a three hour journey away once you reach Chennai.

TYPES OF BUSES

Privately run buses and government service exists side by side in most states. The private buses are usually a little more comfortable. The government buses are fast catching up. The government buses have rules and a fixed timetable, the private operators are not so reliable at times. Except those private operators in business for years.

The buses are simple / semi luxury /luxury and sometimes airconditioned. This classification is for both private and government buses. However, few govt buses are airconditioned.

Many private buses offer video coach services where the "inflight" entertainment is a local movie on a central video screen. The volume is usually loud and hence avoided. Some travellers enjoy this. The government buses have no videos.

Madurai Kodaikanaal Pristine beauty of the Western Ghats ; breathtaking and delightful for the variety of flora of a largely untouched environment known for its biodiversity.

Jammu Srinagar – 7 to 9 hours; has to rate amongst the most beautiful bus drives in the world.
