Which model digital camera to take these lovely pictures?

WHICH MODEL DIGITAL CAMERA?

Hi all,

I want to buy a digital camera and have no idea where to start. I just need something for snapshots as I have a good SLR. I'm in the Uk at the moment and have a budget of about £300 but could go up I guess.

Can anyone help? what should I look for?

Depends on what you want to use it for really.. Have a look at the reviews over at:

My webpage might prove useful too:

2. Canon S30

Take a look at this 3.2 Megapixel P&S type camera but with plenty of full manual features for someone used to a full-service SLR. Its handy to fit into pockets and a nice supplement for a SLR w/o being too much camera. I bought this to backup my Nikon N80 - love it. Using both for backpacking. Price just went down to USD450, or just $400 at bhphotovideo.com out of NY.

Try cnet.com also for reviews...personal pref will ultimately dictate your choice, but I'm very happy with the S30.

3. Some general thoughts...

When choosing a digital it's a good idea to give some consideration of how large you want to print. A 2 or 3 megapixel digital will do great 5"x7" and good 8"x10" prints. To get film quality 8"x10" you need 5 megs or more.

Think about how much zoom you want. Most under $1,000US digitals have 3x, 35-105mm equivalent zooms.

If you now use a film SLR you will probably want a digital with some manual controls. A number of the less expensive digitals will be point and shoots.

http://www.dpreview.com has a good Buying Guide - upper left that will let you set pixel count, zoom, price, etc. and will give you a list of the cameras that fit your requirement. Don't pay too much attention to the listed price as those are the prices when the camera was released. Prices drop dramatically as cameras are on the market for a while.

5. api -- digital camera -- £300 budget

Api,

I will presume that you will be moving from UK within the
year and that you will be heading home. In which case, I
would recommend either a Pentax or Olympus as they come
with One(1) year International Warrenties which may (but
hopefully not) come in handy back in NZ. As for particular
cameras, I would recommend the Optio 330 GS and here is a
link for the Optio 330 GS: http://www.pentaxcanada.com/products/digital/optio330gs.php Unfortunately, the Pentax UK site does not have the
Optio 330 GS listed but at the shop where I work, we sell
the camera for $549 + 14.5% Tax = $628 CDN which will equal
approximately £262.

For Olympus, I would try the D-550 which is known as the C-300 in the UK and sells for the same price......in Canada at
least. Here is the link for the D-550/C-300 camera:
http://www.olympus.co.uk/consumer/digimg/intro.cfm?id=C-300ZOOM

Hope this helps.

:)

Api: Don't forget to budget for some storage media - most cameras come with completely insufficient.. Our Sony DSC-F505V came with an 8Mb MemoryStick - that's about 8 good quality pictures!

- I'm sorry, am I standing on your bridge?

STORAGE DEVICES

STORAGE DEVICES FOR DIGITAL CAMERAS

I just bought a Canon S200 digital camera and will be taking it to India with me. The camera only comes with an 8MB Compact Flash card which can't hold many pictures. I would like to upgrade to a large CF card. Is the max size 128 or 256MB?

I was also wondering if there would be a place in India where I could buy the CF card. I will be landing in Calcutta.

Any info is greatly appreciated!

Take thee to Ramshop.net (flash) for a real experience. Yes, you can get larger capacity cards. Consider that nifty IBM microdrive at 1 gig also. Carry a card reader as well. Since they come USB that can be a problem with older machines as I found out this summer. CF is available in India but I would bet you it is higher than you could get it elsewhere like Fry's. Also, don't know the size..

2. Memory

Get a digital wallet, it is a portable hard drive, now with memories over 20G, cost not much more than a couple of flash cards.
