TRAVELLERS DISCUSSION SPECIAL !
Which speed film should I take to get these lovely pictures? 400 ASA seems to be a comprehensive solution!
India: Which FIlm speed to use ?
Hi:
I am going to India for one month on Saturday. I am wondering if there are any avid photographers out there, if anyone can recommend to me weather I am better of using 400 or 200 speed film I normally use 200 and was under the impression than 400 would come out kind of granier, but the packages say that 400 is good for daylight conditions as well as fast scenes and darker conditions. Any advise would be appreciated email me at rbcy@hotmail.com Just your average 3 citizenship no nationality guy |
1. Film
In India I shoot 100asa in summer and
400asa in winter. Which part of India are you going to and which type
of film are you using, ie slide, negative, black and white? And what
are you going to be doing with your pictures?

2. depends
what type of camera r u using ??
Print -In general use 400, use 400 asa if u r going to use point and shoot and will only enlarge very few of your shots . Use 100 if u r planning to enlarge lots of the prints and and u r carrying tripod with u. Slides - 100 asa and a few 400 asa for low light situations. 200 asa - I dont think so |

I have a Canon eos 500 alhough I noramlly
shott on authomatic mode. I will make prints although will probably scan
most of them. I tend to take lots of pcs in a trip (like 20 rolls)
Im not carrying a tripod, and I do like to enlarge the best pics of a given trip. I have gotten by before and gotten decent pics by using 200 but Im trying to maximize my results. SO what do you say, 100 or 400? Just your average 3 citizenship no nationality guy |

Taking 400 may be more dicey as it is more
sensitive to x rays. I found that the security was a total pain in the
anatomy about hand searches of the film. Maybe you will have better
luck..

5. 400
I took 400, and was happy since I ended up
taking at least half of my pictures out of moving vehicles; cabs,
rickshaws, etc.
It's a good all around speed since you'll be shooting in all kinds of light.

Sorry to respond to a private meassage
here but I lost it in cyberspace. I can sympathize with the mindless
approach of security toward the x raying of film. However, it has
happened to me in my home country as well. They like to delay you till
you get desperate enough to agree. I concur on the terminology for
them as well..

7. film
you can get film fairly easily out here, and
it's cheap
(e.g. Konica 100asa/36 slide film for 250rp.) I'm down in Chennai and during the day 100ASA would be fine for typical lens/shot (I have an f4-f22 zoom). it's colder/more cloudy? in North. I let my mind wander, and it never came back |
8. A good compromise
ASA 100 may be too slow sometimes and 400 is
too sharp in contrast under tropical light. So, I would say ASA 200.
