INDIA TO EUROPE BY MOTORBIKE

Royal Enfield Thunderbird SAYS :

I'm going to buy a Royal Enfield in India and ride it back to the UK. Can anyone give me some info. about getting it across borders, (paper work, red tape etc). And what are the rules and costs, of importing a bike into England? Any advice will be greatly received. Cheers

1. I came overland using public transport and met up with some friends of mine who came from UK to India (and on to Singapore) with a landrover. For details look at their web-site www.overlandtooz.com - they had trouble with Pakistan but the rest was quite straight forward providing they had the carnet.

2.

..but since two months or so the authorities have made this next to impossible. It's all about getting that carnet de passage - they don't issue it anymore for Enfields. It's really a matter of Indian logic, so I wouldn't be surprised if they change their mind again and restart issuing the documents some time.
You can still ship a bike to Europe, but in that case you'd be far better off buying a vintage model (25+ years old). Otherwise you'll have some turmoil with environmental legislation. A vintage model costs about 35 to 50,000 roops (the latter if you go to the tourist Israeli trap that Karol Bagh is)rebuilt condition and the shipping should be possible for under 12,000 Rs.
