WOT ? WANT TO SEE THE SIGHTS ?

In every city there is a sightseeing tour. It would usually cover the city in three to four hours. In the larger cities like Delhi and Mumbai it takes about six to eight hours.

In the shorter tours usually there is a morning tour and an evening tour. Airconditioned buses are available in many cities.

ADVANTAGES

The tour would usually include many Indians where you get an opportunity to meet you.
Travellers like you , they would be from other cities in India and eager to share with you. Take this opportunity to interact with them and learn more about the culture and people of this country.

Once you get a feel for the city, the guidebook or the locals will tell you what else there is in the city to do.

GOING IT ALONE

If you choose to traverse the city in an auto and/or bus then you have the luxury of choosing what you want to see. Take the opportunity to interact with the local people. Be polite and friendly ,but make it clear you are not forming friendships just then.

Indians are delighted to chat with travellers – you might be the only foreigner they will meet in their life. Thus, they may want to take a photo with you or if you do not have a camera ,they will ask you to send a photo. Chat with them ,chat with their families and you will enjoy.

When alone be polite , chat when you wish to and if you want privacy be firm and polite in saying no to a conversation.

GUIDES

When you hire a local guide, make sure that you fix a fee for their services before you hire them.

A knowledgeable guide will give you more insight to the city and the museum or temple that you are seeing , than any guidebook can.

All guides authorized by the government are required to have a licence – you can ask to see it. Many guides are self appointed guides. Again there could be some pleasant exceptions amongst them.

Guides also are knowledgeable about hotels, restauarants of the city, you can ask them for advise. Be aware though that like guides all over the world ,they are tipped by the businesses they recommend. But that is a normal business practice.
