U.S. Trafficking in Persons Report Indicts Nigeria
The U.S. Trafficking in Persons Report 2002 rated Nigeria as a major player in the global human trafficking and is yet to meet the minimum standards set by the U.S.
The U.S. statement described Nigeria as a source, transit and destination country for persons trafficked to Europe, the Middle East and West and Central Africa.
It added that Nigerian women were being trafficked mostly for sexual exploitation to Italy, but also to other destinations including other European countries.
Children are also said to be trafficked for domestic and agricultural labor from and to West and Central Africa.
The report however added that Nigeria was making progress toward stemming the trend
