South-South Politicians Vow to Produce Next President

A bi-partisan grouping of top politicians from the South East and South-South zones of the country have gathered in Abuja to plan on how to ensure a successful campaign to producing the next president of Nigeria.  They vowed to expunge politicians from the zones who are in support of candidates from other geo-political zones for the 2003 presidential elections.

They also set up a joint action committee to work towards the realization of the common goal.  Former Governor of Edo State, Chief John Oyegun is to head the 16-member committee.

President Obasanjo Okays Sovereign National Conference

In a surprised change of position, President Obasanjo, Tuesday, June 25, shifted from his earlier stance and expressed support for a sovereign national conference to straighten out all contentious issues in the country.  He made the dramatic change in Abuja when he played host to a delegation of the youth council of Ohanaeze, the pan-Igbo socio-political group, in the Presidential Villa.

According to the President, “a national conference to look at how Nigeria can be more effective, efficient, generate more sense of belonging and more stake in the Nigerian enterprise would be most welcome.  Nigeria needs a whole-sale arrangement for stability, unity and harmony that makes all of you have stake in the enterprise called Nigeria.”

Obasanjo, who had repeatedly opposed the demands for the convening of a national conference in the past, stressed that he had nothing to fear or worry concerning the national conference “whether sovereign or otherwise.”  He however added that convening a national conference of all nationalities was a constitutional issue that could only be handled by the National Assembly.
