Nigerian Catholic Priest Indicted for Rape in the U.S.
A Nigerian Catholic Priest, Cyricus Udegbulem, from Orlu Dioces is the latest victim to be caught in the drag net of sex scandals presenting rocking the Catholic Church in the United States.
Rev. Father Udogbulem was alleged to have raped a female parishioner in January 1, 2000 when she came to him for marriage counseling to seek a way to invalidate her holy matrimony. The priest was reported in
the New York Times to have been
indicted for rape and sodomy, for which he may face a jail term of up to 25 years.
Father Udegbulem went to serve in the Brooklyn Diocese in New York in 1998 during which period
the reported incident took place. His case is only one of several such sexual abuse cases against Catholic priests in the United States. At least three bishops and an unspecified number of priests have been forced to renounce their priesthood
in the U.S. since the scandal came to the open. If the case is proven and judgments is passed, Father Udogbulem may just be one more number in the unending list of infamous priests.
