Home Coming of the Super Losers
The Super Eagles arrived Nigeria to a rousing welcome by President Olusegun Obasanjo Monday, June 24 who hosted the Nigerian team which returned home after their bushed exploits in the
ongoing Korea-Japan World Cup in South Korea and Japan, and used the occasion to announce that his administration would not support the employment of a foreign coach to handle the country’s soccer team.
He said with adequate training, the local coaching crew would take the team to greater heights.
President Obasanjo said although the team played well, they lost out in the first round of the competition because they lacked the three vital ingredients necessary for a successful outing: adequate preparation, prayer and luck.
Barely two days after he emphatically declaring in support of local coach, President Obasanjo has made a suddenly and dramatic shift of position by approving the appointment of a foreign
coach for the national team. Minister of Sports and Social Development, Mr. Stephen Akiga, said in Lagos Thursday, June 27, that the President approved the request of the ministry to hire a foreign coach shortly before he left for Canada to attend the
meeting of the G-8 leaders.
Mr. Akiga, who was addressing a press conference at the National Stadium in Lagos said, “I am please to inform you this morning that Mr. President, shortly before his trip abroad two days
ago, gave the go-ahead to scout and recruit this foreign trainer.”
He said it was left to the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) to look around for a suitable coach.
