Lagos Celebrates Ninth Anniversary of the Annulment of June 12 Election

Memories of the annulment of the June 12, 1993 elections reechoed Wednesday, June 12 at the ninth anniversary of the event with calls on former military President Ibrahim Babangida to explain exactly why he annulled the election.  Governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, who was the key speaker at the Lagos celebration of June 12, pointedly told Babangida that there was no alternative to proper explanation of the reasons for the action.  Also at the Lagos rally were Lagos State Governor Bola Tinubu, Bayelsa State Governor Diepreye Alamieyesigha and representatives of Osun and Ekiti state governors.  Other dignitaries who spoke at the rally praised Chief M. K. O. Abiola, the winner of the annulled elections, which triggered crises resulting to his death, and called on the Federal Government to give him national honors.  Governor Tinubu later used the occasion of June 12 to declare interest in running for a second term in office.
