Conflicting Statements Jeopardizes Privatization NITEL Plan

The Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) said it would go ahead with the privatization of NITEL despite the announcement by the Minister of Communications, Mr. Bello Mohammed that the Federal Government had suspended the exercise.  BPE Deputy Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Joe Chegbo Anichebe said rather than suspending NITEL’s privatization, the BPE would put in place the management contract for the flagship of the Nigerian communication industry in August.  Meanwhile, the Federal Government has raised the authorized share capital of NITEL to N60 billion. 

 

 

NITEL Redeploys Heads of GSM Directorates

In a move not unconnected with the slow implementation of the Global System of Mobile Communications, the Nigeria Telecommunications Limited, Wednesday 12, June redeployed three of its top executives who are heading various departments responsible for the implementation of the Global System of Mobile Communications in the Corporation. The affected officers are Dr. Kunle Bello, Executive Director, Directorate of Mobile Communications, Mr. S. Ucheaga, Operations and Mr. O.A. Anifowoshe, Planning.

Mr. Tayo Ekundayo, NITEL 's spokesperson in a statement the exercise was carried out in a renewed attempt to to reinvigorate the Mobile Communications Directorate. New executives have since been drafted to take over their positions.
