Date: 09/10/02 Name: Jared Hawkes (J) - Keys, noises, songwriter. Name: Andrea Kerr (A) - Vocalist, songwriter. Name of Band: Living With Eating Disorders (LWED) | |
WW: Is there a story behind your name?
A: Well it was a working title to begin with and just stuck. I particularly like it because I have long been troubled with unusual eating habits and problems. J: We found it in a local paper. It was the title of an article and we thought it sounded pretty unusual. It was never intended to be a permanent name for the band
J: Talking Heads, Brian Eno, Severed Heads, David Bowie, MBM, QOTSA & various electronic stuff. A: The thought of this question being asked has always terrified me, as I was afraid I would have to say the ‘Eagles’ as they are one of the first bands I remember knowing the words to. As a child I loved going for runs in the car down the west coast of Scotland, we would listen to the ‘Eagles’ and ‘Fleetwood Mac’ and I have really fond memories of that. Something else I will always remember from childhood was the Pink Floyd video for ‘another brick in the wall’, mainly because it terrified me. Another video, which scared me, was David Bowie ‘Ashes to ashes’.
J: Film, creative people, guitar pedals. A: Nearly everything I see influences me in one way or another. I am quite sensitive and though most of my lyrics are dark, things or people who I regard to be beautiful usually inspire me. Films, people, conversations, dreams, even the weather. Especially at this time of year when the nights seem to meet in the middle of the day and the stormy energy in the air seems to cling like static. I also think I have been influenced strongly by frightening childhood experiences which I have found more fascinating as I’ve grown older. It might be instinctual to have curiosity about the things we find threatening so that we may learn more about them and protect ourselves from what we believe the danger to be. I love Halloween as well, it’s my favourite day of the year & it also happens to be my birthday.
A: Well we have Mike to thank for that. We were desperate for a site but couldn’t afford it, and Mike has built it for Vodka alone! So we are very grateful and I suppose it does really, we took the photos at home and always wanted to keep as much artistic control of the band as possible. Which is total control at the moment as we are unsigned. J: It certainly supports the darker, menacing elements of our music. However, I think the new site which is currently being developed by Mike better suites our nature. Hopefully it'll be online soon.
A: I hate describing it at all as I’m unsure how to do it best. Someone once described the sound as angelic, yet someone else described it as alarming. I guess it lies somewhere between sleepy sort of murmurings and painful bursts of anger. J: Unusual.
A: Female pop singers reach quite a high level of success, but in the rock scene I’m not sure. I think it probably has more to do with what the fans are looking for than talent; however I will stop there before I say something I regret and make life difficult for myself.
A: No. Ha! Was I supposed to say yes? We will never be a stadium style band, though I would like to think we could build up a loyal following. It would give me more satisfaction to know we were making a difference to a few special people’s lives, rather than bulking out the CD collections of the masses. J: Doubt it.
A: I never sit down to write a song. I generally decide which of the things I have written, I would like to sing. I tend to write all the time as I find it hard to express the darker side of my nature. I think I am generally quite an easy going person and would hate to bother people with the insecurities and self hate I face every day, and the best way to let it go is to write it down. So I don’t set out to write lyrics as such, but write in a cathartic way and choose the words later to fit the music WW: At this relatively early stage in the bands life together, how can you see LWED developing and what direction do you see yourselves following in the future? A: At the moment the live sound is completely different to the studio sound, which is an aspect I really enjoy about the band. Hopefully we will carry on writing and recording the way we do and continue gigging to reach as many people as possible and of course to enjoy ourselves, as that’s what it is really about. J: I honestly can't answer that one at the moment. My main incentive is to continue writing and recording and I think our direction will become apparent later on when we have more material. WW: Give us some of the latest news on the band (recordings, gigs etc). A: We have another three tracks just about ready to go and we have started another two songs which I am really excited about called ‘lullaby’ which is about self harm, and ‘2am’ which is about a haunting. Our next gig is on Tuesday 15th October at the Highbury Garage in London supporting New Disease, and we will be looking for others after that. J: Currently recording vocals for "Demon". Completed and mixed "Talk to God" and "Never Know". New web site in development.
