You Did This
Poet unknown

She sits,
Holding him in her arms,
Offering nothing,
Her hate,
She gives him poison,
Collected from the village well,
Dirty,
Full of disease,
His big, beautiful eyes,
Bulge from his skull,
Not understanding why his mother treats him so badly,
Why she refuses to take away his hunger,
Why she doesn't love him.

They did this.

She sits,
Cradling him in her arms,
Offering all she has to give,
Her love,
The few drops of water,
Collected from the village well,
She trickles it from her fingers,
Into his tiny mouth,
His big, beautiful eyes,
So innocent,
Not understanding why his mother weeps,
Why she feeds him the few grains of corn she has,
Why again she leaves none for herself.

We did this.

She sits,
Cradling him in her arms,
Offering all she has to give,
Her life,
The precious little water she gave him,
Will keep him,
Just a little longer,
His big beautiful eyes,
Look to her for comfort,
Not understanding why his mother doesn't wake up,
So small and helpless,
Stranded.

You did this.
