Swirls of Blue and Green

By Maureen

[Maureen note: There is a web site on the Space Cases web ring called "Celestia's Space Cases Page." The girl who runs it is my best friend. The character in this fanfic named "Celestia" has no relation to my friend. My friend came up with the title for a nickname to use on her web site. You may be confused at the beginning, but things should start to clear up soon, just use your head. And I backed up the story about fifteen minutes. The teaser was to give you some background on the Suzee-Harlan relationship at present.]

Part One: New Arrivals

Celestia sat alone in her quarters. The spatial rip was nearing the Christa, as shown by the brightening purple light inside one of her crystal balls resting on her alter. A velvety green cloth was wrapped protectively around the bottom, weaving in and out of the crystal's small stand in a braided fashion.

The spell to locate the worm hole gave Celestia some relief to the magic hunger she had craved ever since her intense charging session had ended many months ago. But she had still been yearning for the time where she can finally work REAL magic. None of these simple and boring spells to mess with. More exciting enchantments with exotic plants, blood from strange animals, and spirits, almost forgotten, called upon and invoked for her rituals.

When the Christa arrived at the spatial rip, she would have to start working her magic immediately. An uneasy feeling was beginning to form at the bottom of her stomach as she thought of the future. What if everything doesn't go according to plan? What if the Christa missed . . . but she knew that was impossible. The spirits, good AND evil, would not allow it. But her anxiety still hung on stubbornly. It was frightening when she thought of all that was at stake, and part of her wondered what kind of idiot she was. Putting this much responsibility on mere children was against her better judgment. Though a much bigger part of her conscience knew the crew had to be the "ones."

A large oval mirror placed on her north wall would have looked nothing out of the ordinary, if it did not show the thoughts and actions of whoever, whenever and wherever simply at her command. As a gift her magic instructor had given her when she was only an apprentice, it was one of her most prized and used possessions. Now the mirror was showing the Christa's Command Post. Not a particularly exciting site at the moment, but it would be . . . soon enough.

It was a slow day on the Christa, as Radu manned the helm with the not-quite-so-helpful help of Commander Goodard. As the day wore on, Radu did what most of the Christa's crew did on days like these, and let his mind wander. Questions sprang up in his mind like: Is Bova as bored as I am?. . . what did Rosie think of that nebula? . . . Did Ms. Davenport like my essay on the third Crusade? . . . others entered his thoughts, which were also as pointless as the others. Then something a little more interesting popped up: Harlan's date with Suzee. It's so easy for them to be together. Why couldn't it be that simple for Elmira and him? Harlan's so lucky, he thought, having the the girl he loves within his reach.

Although . . . no, Radu wasn't even going to think about that controversy with Harlan. It just made him so mad that Harlan took everything he had for granted, and he has so much! But Radu couldn't talk to him about that, and he figured Harlan's business was Harlan's business, but he knew Cat deserved someone better. Onto something happier and more cheerful, he forced his mind to think.

As you can imagine by now Radu was wanting. . . no, dying for something to happen. He wanted anything that would make this day more interesting. ANYTHING.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"Oh, sweet little Radu," Celestia said to herself as she gazed through her large oval mirror.

"You're about to get a lot of excitement . . . " she assured him,"as soon as Bova gets a little more curious . . . "

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"Commander," Bova said as he looked strangely at the screen on his post,"I'm getting a very strange reading up here, you might want to come and take a look."

Well this is more like it, Radu thought.

But the Commander, positioned by the helm, was off in la-la-land. He had also been thinking of Suzee and Harlan's little date. Godard didn't really mind Suzee and Harlan going out, he too remembered the days when he was young, in the academy, and there was this cute little blonde who-

"COMMANDER!" Bova yelled,"PLEASE come up here!" Bova tried not to raise his voice, but he was a bit annoyed at the Commander being fairly oblivious to his request.

The Commander's reminiscing was interrupted and he was set back into focus by the Uranusian.

"Oh," Goodard said, clearing his throat,"let me come take a look at it." Starting to walk away from his stance by the helm, it occurred to him that Radu probably needed guidance while he was looking at Bova's post.

"Keep . . . um," the Commander started, but was at a loss for words,"uh . . . doing what your doing, Radu. Keep flying the ship!" Most would have thought this precaution unnecessary, but the Commander had come to treat and feel for the crew as his own children, and he wanted to protect them as much as he could while letting them have their freedom. Radu also thought this precaution was a waste of time.

Like I wasn't already flyin' the ship, he remarked in his head.

The Commander came up to Bova's command post, and eyed the anomaly thoroughly. After only seconds had passed, he began showing a look of disbelief upon his face.

"It looks like,"Commander Goodard began. He squinted his eyes more intently at the screen, and tried to make sense of the swirling patterns. "No, couldn't be," he said to himself, just above a whisper. Maybe the ship's readings were wrong.

By now Radu was anxious to know what the Commander had discovered. A ship? A super nova? Bova also had the same curiosity.

"What is it Commander?" Bova asked.

"Well," the Commander started,"It appears to be-"

But before he could finish the explanation, Rosie came in through the jump tubes, and noticed Bova and the Commander crowding around the boy's post.

"Hey guys, what's up?" The young Mercurian asked, wondering what they were inspecting. Being naturally upbeat, she assumed that whatever it was would bring good news.

And poor, poor Radu was still clueless. Even though Bova and Rosie were also unaware, it didn't seem to bother them as much as it did him.

"Whoa! Did you just see that?" Bova said excitedly.

After having a look of deep concentration on his face for a few seconds, Bova exclaimed in sudden realization,"Oh wait, I know what this is!" It had surprised him he actually recognized the characteristics outside of class.

"You do?" The Commander asked.

"Yep," Bova replied confidently,"and we're gonna die."

Goodard laughed at Bova's response,"You do know what it is!" Spending years with Bova had made the Commander accustom to his bad mood and he learned how to find what Bova was really saying behind his depressing out look on life.

"What WHAT is?" Radu questioned from the helm.

"Come look, Rosie," Bova said, and beckoned her over to the post. Rosie casually glided to where Bova and the Commander were, and peered down at the screen.

Meanwhile, Radu was getting fairly impatient with the fact that no one had told him what was getting everyone so excited. He couldn't even look at whatever was causing such awe in the three.

"Will somebody please tell me what's going on!" He demanded.

The Commander, after hearing Radu's comment, decided to let Radu put the Christa on auto pilot. It couldn't do much harm, he thought.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Celestia shook her head at the Commander's ignorance. She glanced over at her active spell, noticing the purple light was slowly getting larger inside the crystal ball. The dimensional rift is nearing, she reminded herself, and you must prepare soon. Sighing, her tired eyes once again lifted to her mirror, watching, and waiting.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"Alright, Radu, put the Christa on auto pilot and come here. I was just about to explain it to Rosie."

Radu almost ran up to the post and asked immediately what was going on.

"Well, Radu, Rosie, this right here," he started, indicating to a big batch of color on the screen,"looks like one side of a spatial rip, the side that's on our part of the galaxy. A lot like the one we went through two years ago. But it's 10 times bigger and much more powerful. And the interesting thing is," he added with a bit of flare, "This little sucker is jumping around every half minute or so."

"So in other words," Bova began," it could jump in front of us in thirty seconds and we could, well, either get further from home than we already are OR . . . " he paused for dramatic effect,"die."

"We won't die, Bova!" Rosie said reassuringly.

"Rosie's right," the Commander agreed,"The worm hole's jumping around, all right. But only within a radius of 30 light years around this star," he said as he directed his finger to a small white dot on the screen.

"And exactly how far are we from that star?" Radu asked nervously.

The Commander gave him a comforting smile,"we are exactly 300 light years from that star. Nothing to worry about."

"Wait," Radu blurted out, after thinking for a moment,"If we're 300 light years away from it . . . then how did Bova pick it up?"

All eyes were directed toward Bova, awaiting an answer from him.

"I was bored," Bova said,"I figured nothing was happening here, so I wondered what was happening elsewhere. I didn't know how far the Christa's sensors could go."

The Commander suppressed an angry face. He blinked a few times and rubbed his forehead, trying to block the headache he got whenever a student of his would play around to their own delight.

"Bova," the Commander began,"you're supposed to look for oncoming ships, anomalies that might harm us, and planets or space stations that might help us. Not scanning the universe for something more exciting when you're bored. You know better!"

Bova shrugged his shoulders, and continued looking at the reading from his post. To him it didn't matter if he got in trouble, since it was going to happen someday.

"Hey!" Bova exclaimed, "there it goes again!"

"Oh, yeah, it DID jump," Rosie confirmed, excited.

"But," Radu was the voice of reason,"where is it?" The crew looked at each other, each having his or her own suspicions of where the worm hole might be now.

But Goodard had a sinking suspicion that he hoped was wrong. Turning towards the view screen, he gave the command.

"Computer," he began,"on screen!"

His suspicions were right. Death, a white unknown was hurling at them. All were paralyzed.

"EVERYONE!!! AT YOUR STATIONS!!!" Commander Goodard screamed.

All of the crew present on the Command Post went to their stations as Commander Goodard had instructed.

While the crew began trying to avoid the spatial rip, the Commander spoke through the communicator,"All hands report to the Command Post NOW!!!"

Everyone waited impatiently for the rest of the crew. Davenport was the first to arrive. Oh God, the Commander thought, she won't be much help. Radu and Bova rolled their eyes with the same thought going through their heads.

"What in the world is," Ms. Davenport began,"OH DEAR GOD!!!" she said, catching her first and last glimpse of the spatial rip, and then proceeded to faint making a *klunk* on the hard floor.

Following Ms. Davenport's faint, THELMA came onto the Command Post, walking jerkily along the way. Glancing at the view screen, the android simply responded with,"oh dear," before the crew heard a popping noise coming from behind her head as sparks flew out and she collapsed on the ground, much in the same manner as the teacher.

"Wonderful," Bova remarked.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

On another part of the ship, unaware of the events taking place, a couple continued their date. "How about we-" Suzee began, but her thought was interrupted by Commander Goodard.

"All hands report to the Command Post NOW!!!" the loud speaker blasted.

Suzee and Harlan felt a sharp jolt, as the lights of the Christa flickered for a few seconds. They both knew at that moment that whatever was going on was serious, and time was of the essence.

"Where are the nearest jump tubes?" Suzee asked. Harlan didn't talk, he just lead her, running, down the hall about 30 feet to a set of three jump tubes. Suzee speedily punched the differently lighted buttons on the control panel that would lead her to where they needed to be.

"You go first," Harlan told Suzee, but she was already headed down the jump tube.

"What a great way to end a date," Harlan said to himself in a slightly sad tone.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Suzee and Harlan entered the Command Post to find Ms. Davenport passed out onto the floor, along with THELMA, and themselves heading straight for another "eye of the future." For a minute the two just stood, shocked at the scene that had been laid before them.

"Get to your posts!" the Commander instructed, slightly ticked off by the two's inability to act in this situation. Harlan took control of the helm and started on the Christa making a sharp right turn, away from the spatial rip.

"SUZEE GO TO THE ENGINE ROOM AND MAKE A HYPER JUMP!!!" Harlan instructed the Yensidian while still keeping his gaze fixated onto the screen. Suzee nodded, proceeded down the jump tube nearest to her.

The crew, knowing there was nothing any of them could do now except wait, to see whether or not they could escape this adventure alive.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Suzee arrived at the engine room, and ran straight to the crystals. The crew's fate rested in her hands.

"Let's see," she said to herself,"blue crystal down and green crystal . . . oh, GOD what does green crystal do?!" Why couldn't she remember these combinations? It's right what they say, she thought, you do loose your mind in times of adversity.

Placing herself in all of the other times they had gone into hyper space, she was trying to think of what she pressed, twisted, and pulled up. There was an incident with a Polaxian colony just two months before when they had made a hyper jump . . . what did she do???

I was in here, she thought, I pressed the blue crystal down, went for the green crystal and . . .

"Green DOWN, red UP, and yellow TWIST LEFT!!!!!" She cried, beaming at her accomplishment.

She worked her hands fast, finding the crystals and pushing as fast and as hard as she could. Upon finishing the blue and green, she reminded herself that red was the next to grab. Reaching across with her arm, hand outstretched, she was within grasp of the red crystal, but before Suzee could even put her hand on it, the Christa underwent another rather large vibration, one which threw Suzee across the engine room and caused her to hit her head on a jump tube handle bar, rendering the girl unconscious. She had been so close . . . so close.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"We're not going to make it!" Radu exclaimed as he watched the Christa get closer and closer to the white light.

"WE'RE GONNA DDDIIIIIIIEEEEEEE!!!!" Bova screeched in defeat (again), as the vessel shook violently.

The entire crew had sweat beads forming on their foreheads, along with an intense look of concentration, concern, and fear on their faces.

Commander Goodard was staring directly at the spatial rip, blaming the entire incident on himself. If I had only made Radu stay at the helm, he thought as he scolded his judgment, then we wouldn't be here. Now they were heading straight for the worm hole. And him, who tried to take on the role of Commander and parent on the ship, was powerless to stop it.

"AHH!" Rosie screamed as the ship entered the unknown. The crew was trying their best to stay conscious throughout the shakes and bumps.

Especially the Commander, grasping a pole like a life line, something saving him from what was on the other side.

But by the time the Christa was out of the spatial rip, they would all be unconscious. And when they awoke, nothing would ever be the same, and their whole reality would be forever changed.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Suzee had been lying in the engine room for several hours, out cold. After coming to, she found herself face-up on the floor. She was alive.

But what happened? Did the ship mange to avoid the worm hole? But it couldn't have, she thought, I didn't complete the combination needed for making a hyper jump. So if the Christa didn't slip by in time, she began to reason, I must be on the other side of the worm hole. That left one big, unanswered question: where was she?! The question rang in her mind like an endless, droning bell. Where was she where was she where was she where was she where WAS she? The unknown scared her like nothing else, but she knew she had to remain in control of her emotions. Control was always the one thing that made her feel safe in any situation.

Trying to calm her nerves she stood up slowly, and BAM! Like a mallet to the head she felt a dizzying pain come over her. All of her senses were blocked, she couldn't think of anything, anything at all but the hurt. Putting her left hand on the wall beside her, and the right on her forehead, trying to block out the light illuminating the room.

Censuring some of the brightness, Suzee could hold thoughts in her head, even if only for a minute. What was causing this agony, she wondered. But Suzee was more curious as to what shape the rest of the crew was in . . . considering the fact that they all had most likely gone through the worm hole. The pain began to be not as sudden of a shock as it had been before, and she relaxed her arms to rest by her sides.

Staring down towards the floor, Suzee realized she was still sporting her "first date dress." "What a great first date it turned out to be," she remarked sarcastically. But picturing Harlan in her mind caused a small smile amidst the confusion and misery she now suffered after recovering from her sleep.

Putting her morals back into focus, she snapped out of her day dream. What's really important right now, she reminded herself, was getting to the rest of her crew. Adjusting a hair clip, she felt a large knot on top of her head that was extremely sensitive and painful. And the jump tubes, she noticed, were right by where she had been laying. Spying the hard handle bars on the top (which where low enough to hit her head on), she figured one of them the reason for the bump formed on her skull. One of the last big vibrations most likely sent her across the engine room. A little comfort settled back into her mind. Knowing how something happened or why something worked made her feel safer. This trait caused her to be a bit nosey, but also an excellent engineer.

"So YOU'RE why I feel like so awful," she said, pointing a finger accusingly at the handle bar. It sure does pack a punch, she thought to herself, I still feel like someone shot me in the head with a phaser gun.

But there was something else. Something was different. She felt . . . different. Her whole reality and molecular structure felt strange. But in an eerie way, the strangeness was comforting. Figuring it was nothing, Suzee punched the colored buttons on the control panel to head to the Command Post, and sped down the jump tube.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Celestia's mirror had been blank while the ship went through the worm hole. Now it began to show signs of life. An image submerged of Suzee, going through the jump tubes.

"Oh dear," Celestia sighed when she sensed the pulsing pain in Suzee's head, the same pain also showing up in the rest of the still unconscious crew. Or, at least it would be the same pain when they woke up.

She had to do SOMETHING. Suzee could not think straight in these conditions, and neither could the rest of the crew.

"A simple healing spell should work," Celestia resolved.

Placing her hands in front of her, close together, Celestia imagined a green light coming from her palms and flowing into Suzee's body across the dimensional rift. When the green light started to fade from her finger tips, she moved on.

"Now for the crew. Mirror to the Galaxy B56, show me the Command Post of the Christa at present."

The view of Suzee grew fuzzy, faded, and a bright blue shined out from the mirror. The bright blue began to tone down, and other colors seeped into the picture. Greens, purples, grays, all began to take shape to reveal a crisp and clear image of the crew, unconscious on the floor.

Using her healing power again, only this time making it more powerful by using more of her energy, she flowed the bright light into each member of the crew, trying to lessen the pain they would feel when they woke up as much as possible.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Suzee felt the drug that had taken over her senses in the engine room lighten once she arrived at the Command Post. Going through the jump tubes seemed to eat away at the pain. She was not entirely sure what had caused the relief, but was grateful for it.

Harlan, Bova, Ms. Davenport, and the others were scattered about the Command Post, not moving. Seeing the disturbing sight made Suzee's heart jump into her throat for a split second, before realizing that her friends were probably knocked out by a hard object near them when the Christa had entered the final stages of . . . whatever was going on. After all, she had recovered from the crew's journey on the floor of the engine room with a good sized bump on her head.

Curious as to where exactly the Christa was, since Suzee wasn't exactly sure if the worm hole had taken them or not, Suzee instructed the computer,"on screen!" But nothing happened. "Must be broken," she decided, frustrated and a little scared at the fact she still did not know exactly where in space she was.

Noticing Radu was only a few meters away from her feet, she knelt down and placed his head in her hands. She wanted to make sure he was all right. "Radu!" she whispered fiercly, "Wake up!"

The young Andromedan made no response, causing Suzee to worry. Leaning closer to him, she spoke louder.

"RADU!" Suzee persisted, shaking him profusely,"Answer me!"

Eyes fluttering and head moving about a bit, Radu began to show signs of response. Suzee breathed a sigh of relief. And when Radu opened his eyes completely, Suzee spoke to him again.

"Oh, Radu!" She said, happy that he wasn't hurt badly,"I'm glad you're okay."

Still in quite a daze from what was going on, Radu responded with,"yeah . . . uh, okay." Figuring he needed to get back to manning his post, he sat up quickly and immediately regretted the action. Throbbing, THROBBING pain coming from his head that cascaded to his fingertips shot into his body at lightning speed. Radu winced and laid back down.

Suzee recognized that particular form of intense pain. Reaching out with her right hand, Suzee turned Radu's head to the side, and feeling along his scalp. Radu started to say something, but before he could finish his speech, Suzee's hand brushed the source of his complaints. She moved her hands along a large mound of agony similar to her own. Radu cried out, suffering under the touch. Suzee immediately jerked her hand away, apologizing instantly. Radu forgave her, and said it was not her fault, which it wasn't. Suzee showed him a similar knot on her head around the same place.

"Hurts, don't it?" She asked with a bit of a smirk on her lips, but not enough to be taken seriously.

"Y-yeah," Radu replied from the floor,"but I'm gonna be okay. It's starting to fade a bit."

"Good," Suzee said with a smile,"I'm going to go wake up the rest of the crew."

Suzee turned around and started to walk away when-

"Suzee," Radu called out. She turned around to face the young man. "Nice dress," he remarked, almost without any emotion. Suzee blushed, said thank you, and looked for the crewman (or woman) closest to her. She saw Bova. Hesitating at first to go over to him, she figured it couldn't hurt. But before that could take place, she heard a voice call out from behind her.

"Where is everybody?" The voice asked. Suzee's head snapped to look in the direction the voice was coming from.

"Who said that?" She asked, a little nervous.

"Me."

Suzee became frustrated. "Who's me?"

"Harlan!"

"Oh," Suzee replied. Running her eyes over the Command Post, she saw two feet sticking out of the front side of the helm (the side facing the view screen).

Stepping up to the feet and facing the body they belonged to Suzee greeted him with, "time to rise, sleepy head." Harlan gave her a forced smile, he was mostly concentrating on the slight headache that kept pounding in his brain, though it was starting to go away.

Suzee knelt down beside him and smiled,"you okay?" she asked, concern woven into her speech.

"Yeah," Harlan told her,"except for a bit of a -"

"Headache," Suzee finished for him.

Harlan was confused,"how did you know?"

Suzee toyed with two ways to respond to his question. Shecould just tell him the truth, that both she and Radu had a headache, caused probably by whatever they knocked their heads on when becoming unconscious and she figured the same fate had happened to him. Or she could confuse him even more. Suzee decided on the latter.

"I know everything," she replied in her very own sassy way."Anyway," she continued,"if you don't feel too bad, get up and help me wake the rest of the crew." Harlan nodded, and both he and Suzee (who had been kneeling beside him) rose to find Radu standing, and gazing at the viewscreen.

"Radu!" Suzee said in surprise,"you're better!" Radu nodded, and continued to look at the view screen, which was still blank.

"The view screen isn't working," he directed the last words in Suzee's general direction,"is it?"

"No, it's not working Radu," Suzee said to him,"and I don't know how to fix it." She stared down at the floor, as if she was ashamed of what was coming out of her mouth.

Harlan was shocked. "You can fix a severe malfunction of jumpercables located at the heart of the Christa's engine in pitch black," he told her,"but you can't repair a view screen?"

Suzee was hurt by this comment, but managed to hide it. "I have my areas, but I imagine RADU can fix it." she said, giving Radu a sweetbut oh so persuasive smile.

"Oh, man, where am I?" The three heard another voice coming from Bova's station. "Bova?" Radu asked,"Bova is that you?" Radu was starting to walk over when Bova popped up from his post.

"Hey!" Bova said in awe,"I'm alive!" The irony of the situation was unbelievable.

"Does your head hurt?" Radu asked.

"Not really, but I do have a lump on my head that's pretty painful, if that counts."

"That's amazing," Radu said in disbelief. Another member of the crew knocked out by the same method was rare, almost too strange for his taste.

"What's amazing?" Bova inquired to the Andromedan.

Radu was about to speak, but a certain Yensidian cut him offquickly with her own concerns. "Has it bothered anyone that we STILL cannot see where we are?"Suzee asked the boys, putting her hands on her hips in a dominating stance,"Radu," she said, looking directly at him,"can you fix it? Not to sound rude or anything, I would just like to know where we are."

This made sense to Radu,"okay, I'll do that right now," he told her. Stepping over to his post, he punched a few buttons, and twisted a few crystals before a smile crept onto his face.

"There!" He finally exclaimed,"it's fixed! Suzee . . . will you do the honors?"

Suzee knew everyone was now looking at her, and she squirmed under the pressure. The view screen was blank, alright, and now more than ever she wanted it to stay blank. She knew where she was, all this time she did she just didn't want to admit it. When Radu had asked her to "do the honors" it had all snapped into place. How would the crew react? Here goes nothing, Suzee thought.

"Of course I'll do the honors," Suzee responded in a shaky voice. Taking a deep breath and closing her eyes, afraid of what she might see, she gave the command. "Computer, onscreen!"
