Iraq claims death from US-UK air strike

An Iraqi military spokesman says one Iraqi has been killed and 22 others have been wounded, in the latest US and British air raids on the country's south.

The spokesman says the aircraft had targetted civilian installations in Kut, about 170 kilometres south of Baghdad.

Iraqi television has since broadcast footage of rescue operations, and houses destroyed by the strikes.

Baghdad said last week five Iraqis were killed, and 17 others were wounded, when allied warplanes bombed southern Iraq during an overnight raid.

Almost daily skirmishes are reported in the no-fly zones enforced by US and British warplanes over northern and southern Iraq since the end of the 1991 Gulf War.
