The view at left shows the results of this welding - the three looselinks have been filed down across the weld, to show the join structure.
The weld is continuous and was done with no need for flux application or gas heat. The metal to be welded must be free of oil, however. Degreasing, if necessary, can be done with ethanol, turpentine or creosote.
This is the same technique as used in the industrial production of welded link chain. The welding current is applied for about one second, at (approximately) 100 amps, for 18ga wire.
