Dorothy Cain

'Dot' Cain, owner of the Empire Hotel in Foss Road North, was killed in
September 1926 as a result of a parachute mishap. A Captain Muir had brought his airplane to Leicester to give local people a chance to take a parachute descent.

Mrs Cain was eager to try and mounted the airplane carrying a bunch of 'lucky heather'. At a height of 1,000 feet she stepped over the side and jumped. The parachute, however, caught on the undercarriage and Mrs Cain became
free of the harness and crashed to earth.

This monument is unique in Welford Cemetery in that it has a relief carving of John Clarke who died at his home at 77 King Richard's Road in 1879. Sadly the sculpture
on the top of the monument has been destroyed by mindless vandals.

They are in peace. It is well

John was the son of Thomas Cook. On his father's death in 1892 he took over the family business. It would seem that he was not on the best of terms with his father, there being some dispute over money. This may account for the fact that John is buried in his own plot, some distance from that of his father.

Thomas Cook. Pioneer of travel. Founder of the world's largest travel organisation. First excursion Leicester to Loughborough 1841. Round the World 1872. He brought travel to the millions.

Thomas Cook was born in Melbourne, Derbyshire. When he was 14 he left school to work on the gardens of the Melbourne Estate before moving to Market Harborough where he worked as a wood turner. In the 1830s he became a member of the South Midland Temperance League and, in 1840, founded the
Children's Temperance Magazine.

Cook's first 'tour' was on 5 July 1841, when he persuaded the Midland County Railway
to put on a special excursion train at half-fare to take a party of people from Leicester
to a temperance meeting in Loughborough. This was the first advertised excursion
train in England - if not the World.

By 1865 the business had grown so big that Cook was organising tours to the
Continent and the USA and had to move his head office to London.
