Dr. Qworm the Mad Scientist
Dr. Qworm looks exactly like Mr. Wallace Shawn as Vizzini in The Princess Bride. He is definitely the most obnoxious character in the Welgon Age - even more so than General Kwar (Welcome to the Welgon Age). He is greedy, unempathic, very self-centered and often stupid (Welcome to the Welgon Age, Pseudo-Pacifist Propaganda Parables, The Speed of Stone, The Final Prophecy). Experience stands highest in his scale of values, but most of the time his scientific experimentations make no sense at all (The Substance, Big Bang, The Speed of Stone). He gets stranded in the Welgon Age after one of such failed experiments at the end of which he died (The Mad Scientist), and there are hints that the Welgon Age may actually be his afterlife (A Short Work Schedule). He doesn't seem to be able to get away from it either, as every time he dies he comes back (Welcome to the Welgon Age, Ultimate Power, Pseudo-Pacifist Propaganda Parables), which makes him look a little like a cartoon figure. Politically, he is a technocrat (The Encompassists). He believes he is a great scientist, but most often he is clueless and needs Sarkon to explain things to him (Big Bang, The Final Prophecy, A Short Work Schedule). Then again, sometimes he is able to help Sarkon with the latter's metaphysical questions (The Speed of Stone, Living on Lies and Logic). He is quite jealous of General Kwar's power (The Vital Greed), and once even tries to overthrow him (Ultimate Power). He does have one worthy goal, though, and that is to "do something for the advancement of humanity" (A Short Work Schedule). As a final note, "Dr." stands as a shortening for his first name Dreitos, as he isn't even a real doctor (Ultimate Power, A Short Work Schedule).
