We can do a great deal to enhance creativity in our home, not only creativity in the traditional arts but to help us live a more creative life. Without creativity we feel stuck and powerless. It is our imagination and our ability to act on our dreams that makes life dynamic and growing. Think of creativity in this broader sense as we consider things we can do with our home to foster creativity.

1-Light enhances creativity much like a light bulb illuminates a
room. Natural light is particularly enlightening so look for ways to
bring light from the outdoors into your home. Perhaps it will be a
bay window, or a skylight or even simply making it a habit to open
the curtains each morning. There are other kinds of light as well;
the light of laughter, of someone absorbed in a creativity activity,
and of nature coming into your home through birds singing or the
fragrance of blossoms.

We can't always have natural light but we can light the darker corners
of our home with the warmth of lamps and or by using light colors on
our walls. This does not mean the whole house must be brightly lit.
There are times that creativity comes from quietude and soft darkness.
The warmth of a flickering candle may be all we need. We must find a
balance between the bright outgoing times and the quieter inner times.

2- We also need a place where we can pursue our individual interests.
We are each unique and we need a place and tools to express our unique
selves. Is there a place in the basement with good light and a table
with a clamp to tie flies or a sunny place with a large table to quilt?
We can't always have a place reserved for just these activities, so we
often have to be flexible about how we use the rooms of our house.
Perhaps you will decide that your living room or kitchen will be the
center for sewing or candle making. Let go of your ideas of the
traditional use of a room. Make sure there is a convenient, comfortable
place for each household member to pursue his or her interests.

We also need to allow each person to develop skills without fear of
criticism. Children and adults alike need to be allowed to experiment
with new ideas and abilities. Expectations of perfection kills creative
development. Even an accomplished artist will have periods of struggling
with new skills as he or she branches out in new directions. We need
a place where creativity can fly free, where we can have fun with new
projects without concern about what others will think. Sometimes we may
not even want to share our attempts until we are feeling more confidant
of our talents. We need to make room for that privacy.
3-We all need a place where we are free to wander. Moving about enhances
our ability to dream. Unfortunately this is difficult for most of us.
Many live in city and need to go to a park or such to wander. Even in
the suburbs we no longer feel as safe and free as we once did. Be sure
to make a special effort to take both our children and our creative child
self to safe places that bring us the joy of moving about and exploring.

Often our work places and schools are very restraining to our physical
selves. We sit for hours and are supposed to concentrate. Research tells
us that playful movement builds up the chemicals that prevent depression
and the same chemicals promote creativity. We may not be able to get
the schools or work places to see how this would help them in their goal
but we can find other times of the day to engage in playful movement.

4 -Without change there could be no creativity. As we live and grow we
change and our home needs to change too. Because of this arranging your
house is not a one time thing that you do, instead it is an ongoing
process. We need to do something that marks these wonderful transitions.
Find a place to display pictures marking important moments in the family's
life. I have noticed that people often use their hall for this which
is a very natural place for it as the hall represents a place of
transition, of going from one place to another.

Doors are also symbols of transition and need to open easily giving the
feeling that with every transition into another part of the house that
something of joy awaits us there. Take a fresh look at all of the places
of transition in you home. How do they feel? Are they sending the
message that growth and change are wonderful things?

Individuals in your household also need private places to mark their
own transitions. It might be a journal or a box of keepsakes that
reminds them of significant times in their life.
Take a look at your home. Does it feel full of life?
Find that balance between rigid neatness and overwhelming clutter.
Make room for each individual's interests. If you house is small this
may mean arranging for storage space that is easily assessable so that
a person can get materials in and out easily. Look at non traditional
uses of rooms. Be creative about finding ways to enhance creativity.
