Breast Cancer Awareness

Every Woman's Fear

Breast Cancer - Two words that you don't want to hear!
Breast Cancer - Two words that women fear!

I didn't think it would happen to me,
until my doctor said "I'm so very sorry!"

You'll need to have some surgery, a simple modified mastectomy,
and some radiation or chemotherapy.
"My God" I thought, "How could this happen to me?
will I be sick, will I lose hair,
am I going to DIE? This isn't fair!"

"How did I get this? What did I do?"
You wonder, you worry, "will I be O. K.?"
No one can tell you for sure, no one can say.
I couldn't believe all I had to go through.
Not losing a breast, but a few dear friends too.

No one knows why we get this. There isn't a cure.
It's a devastating disease, that's for sure.

You may think you are safe, you may think you are fine.
But remember, Breast Cancer affects one in nine!

I don't mean to scare you, it's just that I care.
I'm telling you this, so that you'll be aware.

That early detection is your best key.
So do self-exams and mammography!

October has rolled around again this year to remind us about breast cancer, for the third year in a row. However, October shouldn't be the only time we think about this disease which is newly diagnosed in a woman once every 3 minutes or kills a woman once every 12 minutes. It is a disease that should stay in our minds every day.

One common misconception about breast cancer is that it ONLY hits women who come from a family history of breast cancer. That is not the case. In fact, 70% of the cases occur in women with NO identifiable risk factors. With one out of 9 women developing breast cancer in a lifetime in the United States, we need to learn how to detect breast cancer early.
