English translation for those who don't understand French: Fourth panel: Zonker: Or are you so "provincial" (ie. such hicks) that you don't even recognize a French name? Fifth panel: Mark: Let me ask you something: why do you think that we liberated France in 1945? Zonker: Pay attention: we liberated France so that she could be free! Free of foreign domination. Get it? Sixth Panel: Mark: With you guys, loyalty only goes one way! After 9-11, the headlines of the French newspapers said, "Today, we are all Americans!" If the terrorists had destroyed the Eiffel Tower, would you all cry, "Today, we are all French!"? Seventh Panel: Mark: Of course not! And do you know why? Zonker: Why Mark? I think we all know what the 8th panel says. :) |
Click on the comic for the original strip at Doonesbury.com!!! Also, you can check Trudeau's own translation of the strip. Mine is based on my (admittedly) limited knowledge of the language.
