Keep the candle burning...Tenth Anniversary ...so that we never forget

This year marks the 10th year anniversary of the Montreal Massacre. Other massacres have since blotted out the memories of this dreadful day. It seems that things don't change much when it comes to senseless violence and hatred.

Many of the original links that I had on my site have since disappeared. Those that are still there are do not appear to be maintained any longer. I find it odd that on this the 10th anniversary of the tragedy, the site that was most dedicated to spreading information about it has since deleted all that information from their web site. Perhaps it is not healthy to continuously look back at this massacre. Some people may think that it is ghoulish. I don't think so. Life goes on after a tragedy, but we must strive in every way we can to remember the events so that we can ensure that IT NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN. These may sound like hollow words perhaps in view of the school massacres and workplace massacres that have happened just in this year alone. I don't think they are.

Massacres occur when someone loses touch with reality and with sensitivity. Life and death really mean nothing to them at this point. But the motives behind their actions exist outside of the massacres as well. The murderers are dead, but the ideas that sparked their actions still exist. They live perhaps in less dangerous forms, but they exist nonetheless.

When people forget about the past, or at least stop paying attention to it, how can we learn from it? How can we ignore the fact that people died needlessly, that once vibrant lives, full of promise, will never have the chance to realize their dreams? What can we do to eliminate the cause of the massacres?

We must be observant to the world around us. We must, as a people, stand up for our rights, for our freedoms, for who we are. We must educate, educate, educate, and never ignore the warning signs that may indicate the onslaught of another tragedy such as the Columbine shooting and the Montreal Massacre. And how better to recognize the warning signs than to study past similar tragedies? Safety and security are human rights. We have every right, and every need to stand up for them.
