Little Sisters

I drew this little sketch for a friend of mine back in the fall, celebrating the joys of younger siblings. I was in the process of learning how to draw manga-style, and did this one as an experiment. I'm rather proud of the way it turned out, though I definitely still need to work on this whole hand-drawing technique, and the "shine on the hair" thing.

Just as an aside, manga is something I've always admired, partly for the wonderful style of drawing and partly for the excellent stories I've come across. The actual technique of drawing manga-style however is something I avoided as a kid, because every Asian kid I knew who could draw, drew only in manga-style. And doing what everyone else was doing is something I've never really liked doing.

All that changed when I wanted to do a manga spoof one day, and needed to learn to draw in that style in order to spoof it. Well, the idea was shelved a little over 3 years ago, since the spoof wasn't a very good one, and because my drawings, frankly, sucked. A few months ago, however, I found a book for sale at Indigo one day on how to draw manga, and snapped it up. Through the course of learning the style again, I've discovered that in learning the style, I've also developed my own style as well, particularly when it comes to clothing and bodies.

On a slightly related note, after I finally settle on a scanner, my next tech purchase will have to be a pen-mouse. I love the Logitech mouse I've got now, but editing drawings with it is KILLING my wrist!
