Husbands and Pregnancy

"You know that my husband is the most wonderful partner in the world," began Sister-Friend.

"Absolutely," agreed Anne, "You're spoiled rotten."

"Precisely. However, pregnancy was unfamiliar territory for him. Even though this was a planned pregnancy, he didn't seem to grasp that I was pregnant. I think he just thought I was getting real fat," Sister-Friend laughs.

"You know, men aren't given the same exposure we are. When we're little, we're playing with baby dolls. Growing up, it's always something you think about. Women's magazines are full of articles about pregnancy and motherhood. Even Cosmopolitan has had articles about being a mommy."

"But there are no articles about pregnancy in Sports Illustrated," mused Anne.

"Not even in the swimsuit edition," says Sister-Friend.

They laugh.

Sister-Friend goes on, "But no one could be a better father ... or husband. Today's fathers don't have many role models. They have to create a role model within themselves. Watching your husband become a father -- seeing him take pride in being a good father -- oh, that's the best.

"I almost forgot one other thing," says Sister-Friend.

"What's that?" asks Anne.

"Once your husband fully understands that you're pregnant ... he still may not understand that what that means is that you are going to have a baby."

"Uh-oh," says Anne. "When did your husband figure that out?"

"Oh ... driving home from the hospital with the baby in the back seat!"
