What's On Sister-Friend's Bookshelf

  • Beach Music by Pat Conroy. My newest favorite book, that I'm recommending highly to all my friends. It is so rich -- this could have been 10 different books. Anyone with a "dysfunctional family" (pardon my redundacy) will enjoy this novel about a young widowed father facing not only his past, but the pasts of his friends and family. After reading it, e-mail me with your thoughts!

  • I Married Adventure by Osa Johnson. Cannibals, the South Seas, visits with George Eastman and the future King and Queen of England ... and it's all the true life adventures of Osa and Martin Johnson.

  • Singing and Swinging and Getting Merry Like Christmas by Maya Angelou. In addition to being a brilliant writer, Maya Angelou has not been forced to rely on imagination -- she has led an incredible life (in this book, touring Europe with Porgy and Bess, working the same theatre with a then-unknown Phyllis Diller) and has apparently learned lessons from every experience.

  • Wouldn't Take Nothing for My Journey Now by Maya Angelou. Vignettes to touch your soul.

  • A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. Sister-Friend was given this book at the age of 12 by her older brother. It remains my favorite book for its rich characters and simple truths.

  • Joy in the Morning by Betty Smith. The story of a young newlywed couple. Charming and sweet.

  • archy and mehitabel by don marquis. Poetry typed out by archy the roach (a previously incarnated free-verse poet) from his thoughts and that of his friend, a cat named mehitabel (previously Cleopatra).

  • The Fifth Sacred Thing by Starhawk. Utopia/dystopia battle. What do you think Utopia would be?

  • A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving. Simply a great novel. It will make you laugh out loud (as my husband will attest to), and it will make you cry. Most importantly, it will make you consider the idea of fate.

  • The Mists of Avalon by Marian Zimmer Bradley. A very educated retelling of the King Arthur legend, told from the female perspective.

Sister-Friend is always interested in your comments and ideas -- in general or about her web page. Send her a message at CalypsoZ@swbell.net. She thanks you very much.
