"How Many Children Must Die A Thousand Deaths?"

    Tuesday, May 20, 1997

For the second time in as many weeks a little baby girl died this week at the hands of her mother's boyfriend. Her name was Thalia, she would have been a year old this month. But she will never have the joy of blowing out her first candle and getting frosting all over her face. Her life was taken far too soon. Unfortunately, Thalia's tragedy isn't unusual. Last year 3.1 million children were abused by someone they trusted. More than 2,000 of these little ones died at the hands of the people they loved. The rest are still living with the silent legacy.
In some aspects, Thalia the sweet innocent baby, is lucky. At least they can't hurt her anymore. Just a few weeks ago she had a cast removed from her arm where it had been broken in two places.
    Yes, Child Protective Services knew.
    Yes, her mother knew.
    Yes, the doctor's knew.
And yet Thalia was left in that home to be killed. Where do we, as society, lay the blame?
Should we blame the boyfriend that killed her, certainly.
Should we blame her mother who knew, yet did nothing to stop it? of course.
The doctor did what he was supposed to do, he notified CPS so I guess we can't blame him.
But what about CPS? Where were they when Thalia was having her skull crushed in? Why when they visited her home two months ago didn't they do everything in their power to protect her?
And where does that leave all the other Thalia's?
Who is going to protect them?
Who will take them into their arms and tell them that love isn't supposed to hurt?
Who will tell them that they are beautiful and loved?
    No one.
    They will be forgotten....
or like tiny Thalia, they will die in their Silent Legacy.

    KARENAWARD

I can say it is a silent legacy because I am a survivor of child abuse. It lives on in the children's hearts forever. They carry the legacy with them into adulthood and very often they too become abusive. And yet they too often do not receive the help they need. Why? Because they are still keeping the secret. They can not hurt the very people that hurt them so much. They carry the burden, they carry the shame, they take the blame, and then they teach their children to do the same.
But it doesn't have to be that way.
    We can break the silence!
We can protect the little ones!
We can stop the silence and begin a new legacy!
It is time to protect the children.
