Welcome

WHAT IS IODE?

The mission of IODE, a Canadian women's charitable organization, is to improve the quality of life for children, youth and those in need through educational, social service and citizenship programs.

WHAT DO THE LETTERS IODE STAND FOR?

The organization was founded in 1900 by Margaret Polson Murray as Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire and today is known as IODE.

WHAT DO THE IODE DO?

The objects of IODE include:

· promoting education of all kinds;
· assisting the study of history by preserving   tangible   reminders;
· helping those in poverty or distress,   without regard to  race, colour, creed or
  gender;
· advancing the progress of the arts.

CANADA WIDE PROJECTS

IODE's concern for children is demonstrated in many ways, including special projects for hearing and visually impaired children, research into kidney disorders, assisting children with cancer, providing genetic counselling.

As concerned citizens, IODE members: provide food for local school children and for 1600 children in Labrador; actively encourage students through stay-in-school programs; award scholarships and bursaries to students at all levels, including the National Ballet and Theatre Schools; annually grant scholarships valued at $100,000 to young Canadians studying for doctoral degrees; support local hospitals and institutions; aid victims of family violence through gifts of food, clothing and support for shelters; encourage protection of the environment.

WHO CAN BELONG?

Membership in IODE is open to women who are Canadian citizens or citizens of other Commonwealth countries. Many lifestyles and skills are represented among our members. There is no typical member. Members are homemakers, teachers, secretaries, nurses, retired women, dieticians, lawyers and business women. The one common factor is that they want to contribute to their community.

Membership offers a sense of purpose, community involvement, personal growth and new friendships that transcend family and work alliances. A bonus of membership - fun, fellowship and lasting friendships.

WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT OF MEMBERS?

Each member participates as her personal schedule allows. Chapters generally meet monthly from September to June. Because of the National and Provincial nature of the organization, the opportunity for involvement is extensive. Your personal leadership skills and talents will be developed through IODE membership.

IS IT EXPENSIVE?

NO. Annual fees average $25. To finance the organization's objectives, members work together at a variety of fundraising activities.
