A bone, a shieve of wheat, an unbound dirt floor
A rune to seek unwound lore
My favorite poets:
- Naomi Shihab Nye:
She writes beautifully on a vast
array of subjects. Her book Words Under the Words: Selected
Poems is a great collection.
- T. R. Hummer:
the heavy thickness of his words make his poems
weightless. I like his earlier work the best. Two are The Angelic
Others and The Passion of the Right-Angled Man.
- Mary Oliver:
I discovered her in a poetry writing class.
She uses images and settings of nature; reading her
poems gives me
a sense of the interconnectedness of life.
Her book American Primitive
won the Pulitizer Prize.
- Billy Collins:
He's another poet who writes well-crafted poems
on just about anything. I have his book The Art of Drowning.
For those of you who write poetry or want to begin, The Practice of
Poetry edited by Robin Behn and Chase Twichell is an excellent book
of exercises.
