Florida's Place in the Sun

by Bev Fraser, Director for Educational Foundation

The following are three examples of AAUW Educational Foundation projects involving Florida Grant and fellowship recipients.

Jenita Lyons is the sponsor of GEMS, Girls Educated and Motivated for Success, a project underway in South Miami Beach. Jenita Lyons attended the AAUW Educational Foundation Eleanor Roosevelt Teacher Institute last summer. She writes, "Your contribution will help young women overcome their obstacles and realize their potential in math and science."

GEMS' mission is to prepare young women for productive roles in society. It involves a three part mentoring program: tutoring in math and science, Saturday educational field trips, and a three-week summer math enrichment program. It will close with a trip to Kennedy Space Center to meet with women scientists and engineers

Jenita stated, "The Eleanor Roosevelt Teacher Fellowship Institute was seven days of intense workshops which provided me with the training needed to properly manage this program. It also allowed me to build a support group of AAUW members. Thank you for your financial and moral support for the GEMS Tutorial Program."

Dr. Jean Dangler is a recent recipient of an American Fellowship. Dr. Dangler is an assistant professor of Spanish in the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics at Florida State University. Her project is entitled "Cutting Poems: Textuality and Alterity in Medieval and Early Modern Iberia."

Dr. Dangler's research shows how a series of poems from medieval and premodern Arabic, Jewish, and Christian sources generated some of the momentous cultural and historical changes that mark that period of Iberian history.

At the convention we'll have an opportunity to learn first hand about another Florida project. Louise Chapman and Cynthia Cheasley, Florida Teacher Fellowship Recipients of 1998-1999 will present their Rose Bay Project. Louise teaches high school biology, Cynthia teaches math. At Rose Bay in Volusia County their students collect data on water quality, plant growth, and weather conditions to help develop a low impact park.
