Leadership Training:
Focus at 1999 Cluster Meeting

by Margie Tinsley, Cluster Leader

Hurricanes Floyd and Irene posed a threat to our fall Cluster meetings. However, we were lucky! All the Cluster meetings were eventually held and the reports are in.

The "train the trainers" seminar conducted at the summer board meeting set the stage for our 1999 Cluster meetings. Under the expertise of Joyce DePass Shuler, Leader on Loan from the Association, and Lesley Henderson and Sandi Chamberlin, Co-Directors for Program, participants were introduced to the Leadership modules: Am I Ready to Lead?, Building Intergenerational, Teams and Women, Power and Assertiveness. Coupled with the theme for the 2000 Convention "Team AAUW: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" leadership training was developed around these modules. Facilitators at each Cluster offered personalized and informative presentations.

Based on the comments received, members attending the Cluster meetings welcomed the experience. Programs were well focused and well appreciated. Active interaction among participants was encouraging.

At the West Central Cluster meeting, luncheon proceeds benefited Bethune Park, a facility serving minority migrant youth. Sun City Center Branch's Carla Miles suggested combining a Cluster meeting with supporting a community outreach program. What a great idea!

Cluster Representatives and alternatives were elected at each Cluster meeting. Look for installation during the 2000 Convention in April.

Many thanks to all Cluster Reps, Branch President Reps, hostess branches and participants for making the 1999 Cluster meetings a meaningful experience for all attendees.
