Meet the Candidates

The Nominating Committee is proud to present the following slate of candidates for the Florida AAUW State Board. Elections will be held during our April 2000 Convention. The term of office for these candidates is July 1, 2000 to June 30, 2002.

Presented by: Joan R. Borders, Nominating Committee Chair and members Sally Bailey; Erleen Kehoe; Barbara Knapp; and June Littler. For concerns or questions, please call Joan at 321-777-6228.

Leslie M. Henderson - Candidate for President
Leslie is currently Co-Director for Program and Co-President of the Suncoast/Carrollwood Branch. A member of the Association Program Development Committee, she has served as Florida Director for Program and Administrative Assistant. Leslie is a member of the Executive Board of the PACE Center for Girls-Hillsborough and served on the Board of Equity Program for the Hillsborough Public Schools.

Leslie's goals as President are to increase the visibility and amplify the voice of AAUW in Florida, to continue relevant and replicable programming, to ensure that more Florida members are appointed to Association committees, to streamline the state structure to increase financial support of branch equity projects and to encourage continued coalition building.

Renee Ramsay - Candidate for Director for Membership
Renee served as the local arrangements committee chair for the 1999 Florida Convention and is the current Leader-on-Loan Coordinator for Florida. An AAUW member since 1979, Renee hails from Wisconsin where she served as branch president.

As Director for Membership, Renee will initiate strategies to retain new members and reach out to diverse underrepresented groups (including small business owners, medical professionals, etc.). She plans to survey younger members and potential members about AAUW and share those results with branches seeking to increase membership.

Joy Bove Lurken - Candidate for Director for Public Policy
With a strong background in grassroots government, Joy served on the State Steering Committee '99 for "Get Out The Vote," as well as branch Public Policy chair '90 - '91 and '97 - '98. Working with the Indian River County Supervisor of Elections Office for seven years has given Joy experience troubleshooting at precincts and thinking quickly on her feet. Joy is employed in ministerial work and as a language teacher.

Joy is determined to strengthen the Voter Education Campaign and AAUW leadership in women's coalitions, and to achieve gender balance in governing bodies as Director for Public Policy.

Carol-Lynn Bevc - Candidate for Director for Communications
Carol-Lynn is the current Director for Communications and is seeking re-election "to building on our accomplishments and engage in coalitions which will continue our mission." She works in accounting for a marketing and graphic design firm in Winter Park. Carol-Lynn served as Cluster Leader, branch president and program chair. In 1998, she and her husband created and designed the Florida AAUW Web site (www.florida-aauw.org). They continue to maintain and update Web site.

With creative use of our resources, Carol-Lynn seeks to improve communications with members and to reach potential members. "Communications is a two-way street and we need to offer as many avenues to reach the broadest possible membership base."

Connie Davis - Candidate for Secretary
Connie is a member of the Northern Palm Beach County Branch. She is currently VP-Program for that branch. Connie edits and proofreads FloriVision as a member of the Communications committee. She served as Florida AAUW Secretary during 1996-1997 to fulfill the term of the woman elected who was forced to resign because of her husband's illness.

Connie is a former teacher of high school English and a debate and drama coach. Mother of three, she enjoys reading, gardening, travelling and working with AAUW.
