Vouchers in Florida

Joy Bove Lurken, Director for Public Policy

One of the principles upon which this nation was founded was a free public education for all. Public education defines and advances our nation's commitment to basic principles of equity, fairness, and opportunity for all.

Vouchers diminish the resources to public education and the ability of public schools to compete and excel. AAUW supports adequate and equitable funding for all students and at K-12 levels public funds for public schools only.

Article I of the Constitution of the State of Florida states: "No revenue of the state or any political subdivision of agency thereof shall ever be taken from the public treasury directly or indirectly in aid of any church, sect, or religious denomination or in aid of any sectarian institution."

The American Association of University Women believes that vouchers have the potential to discriminate among students on the basis of ability, sex, income, location and religion, thereby segregating American children. AAUW opposes the use of vouchers, tax credits, scholarships, or any other device that provides taxpayer dollars to parents of private or parochial school or home schooled students for purposes of providing an alternative to public education.
