Fall 2000 FloriVision
Forming and Informing

Joy Bove Lurken, Director for Public Policy

With volunteer networking and on-line networks, AAUW informs women on important issues. By forming coalitions with other groups interested in public issues, we could strengthen our networking. Suggestions for coalition partners include The League of Women Voters, Woman's Club, AARP, etc.

As elections roll around the strength of coalitions become obvious. By joining with other groups, AAUW can hold candidate forums, sponsor Get-out-the-Vote campaigns, and encourage letters-to-the-editor on important issues. Jointly the coalition can be stronger than each group acting separately.

AAUW is encouraging all branches to form coalitions. Find a group with which you can work and work together to inform during this extremely important election period.

In addition to forming coalitions, AAUW is also urging members to inform the public about our issues of concern by writing letters to the editors of our local newspapers. Let's write short, to-the-point letters on Social Security, vouchers, education issues (e.g. safety in schools, reduction of class size, recruitment and training of new teachers, etc.) and issues of local concern.

As our FL AAUW President Leslie Henderson is urging us, let's become more visible and mission driven.
