Dragon Colors

Dragon Colors are divided into Three major groups. Chromatic, Metallic, and Gem. We'll start with the Chromatic colors.

The Chromatic(Element), or evil Dragons, are those considered loyal to the Queen of Darkness, Takhisis. these dragons tend to have territories.  They are solitairy but males will tolerate females in their territories.  Males have larger territories that often encompass the territories of 2 to 5 females.  Air dragons mate in the air.

White Dragons
These are the smallest and the swiftest of the dragons. The Whites love the bitter cold of winter and usually make their home in the areas of Krynn that few other beings are inclined to enter due to its frigidity and inhospitality. The area they are known to most inhabit is the Icewall Glacier area. But, unfortunately for them, with their smallness came another which is akin to it: smallness of mind. These swift, often message-bringer, dragons are also the most dim-witted. Unlike most other Chromatics, however, Whites can breathe under water. Their breathweapon is a cone of frost.

Blue Dragons
These lightening-bolt breathweaponed dragons are considered the most cooperative—both with each other, and their mortal commanders. Unlike their little White cousins, Blues prefer dry, arid deserts and heat.

 Green Dragons
Ah, the Greens… lovers of forests and hoarders of treasure… They prefer using their magic and cunning if they must fight until they can no longer do so; at which time they resort to their breathweapon: a deadly chlorine gas.

 Red Dragons
So, do you like going to the mountains… hiking, camping, and all that? Well, I guarantee you wouldn't enjoy it quite so much if you stumbled across one of these dragons' lairs. The Reds are quite like their Green cousins: they love hoarding treasure, and would rather use magic than their razor-sharp claws and teeth to win a battle, though they will use that and their fiery breathweapon if necessary. They are also the one Chromatic that can shapeshift.

Black Dragons
The unruly group of the bunch. Blacks are independent and prefer solitude and the study of their magic to putting up with company (thus the reason why the Black Wing of the Dragonarmies fell apart during the WotL). Their habitat of choice is any of the swamps and bog lands of Krynn. The Blacks have a power over darkness itself, and use it to their advantage in combat. Their breathweapon is acid. Between those two options as well as their vast array of spells and then their physical assets; personally, I wouldn't want to have to fight one. Khisanth (also known as Onyx) is the most commonly known Black. She was the infamous guard of the Blue Crystal Staff and the Disks of Mishakal in Xak Tsaroth that the Heroes of the Lance had to face.

The Metallic dragons, also known as the Dragons of Truth, the Light Dragons, and the Dragons of Good, are the followers of Paladine. These dragons vary in style and shape.  Their scales are all metallic, providing excellent protection in battle.  Most Metal dragons are highly intelligent and don't like conflict.  They typically only fight when necessary.   Lifestyle habits can vary.  Many become healers and teachers.  Highly tolerant of humanoids.  Metal dragons are also resistent to fire attacks.  However, they're weak against ice attacks.

Gold Dragons: Gold dragons are arguably the most powerful of the metallics. The largest of the Dragons of Truth, golds are also proficient spellcaster and scholars. The Gold dragons prefer to live in the mountains, like their red kindred, and breathe fire as well as chlorine gas, preferring to use spells before wading into battle.

Silver dragons are the race most beloved by humans. Silvers enjoy the company of humans, and often make their homes near humans. They are adept at polymorphing to human shape, as well as that of animals. Silver dragons have often come to Krynn's defense with their ancient allies, the Knight of Solamnia, wielding magic, a cone of frost, and paralyzing gas against their enemies. A silver dragon named Gwynneth(Heart) is the dragon that joined Huma Dragonbane in the battle against Takhisis in the Third Dragon war, banishing the Dark Queen from the world at the cost of their lives.

Copper Dragons The smallest of the Metallics, coppers are also the most self-centered. While far from being evil, coppers will rarely stir to a cause that has nothing in it for them. The copper's breath weapon is either a gas of slowness, or a cone of acid. Coppers prefer to avoid confrontation, and will only use non-destructive spells and the gas at first. Like their gold brethren, coppers prefer to live in the mountains.

Bronze dragons prefer to make their homes near water. They use a repulsive gas and lightning breath against their enemies, though they dislike battle, but will fight for the side of good willingly, as they did in the War of the Lance.

Brass dragons are firm believers in physical might-might makes right-but are in no way evil. Brasses prefer to make their homes in the desert and dry lands like blues. They use their breath weapons, a wave of heat or sleeping gas, only relying on magic as a secondary weapon.

Mercury Dragon - These dragons are the fastest dragon variety.  They are not all that large but are incredibly fast in the air

Steel Dragon - These dragons are not the largest metal dragon variety but they are the strongest.  They are decent fighters but slow fliers.  Steel dragons either have a wyvern body style or the typical 4 legs and wings body style.

Gem Dragons - Gem dragons are typically very beautiful.  Most of them have neutral alignments.  Gem dragons are rare and are usually solitary.  Generally 4 legs and 2 wings body style.

Amethyst dragons are wise, and prefer to talk than fight. Their breath weapon is a violet, faceted object, which explodes on impact. They live by isolated mountain lakes, and eat fish and gem stones.

Crystal dragons are friendly and curious. They enjoy stargazing, so prefer to live where there are clear skies, and it is cold. They usually eat gems and metal ores, and their breath weapon is a cone of glowing shards. Crystal dragons have been known to adopt baby white dragons.

Emerald dragons are paranoid about people stealing their treasure, and will set up alarms around their lair. They make lairs in dormant volcanoes. Their breath weapon is a loud wail. The sonic vibrations of the wail are what causes the damage. They prefer to eat lizards and giants.

Sapphire dragons are very territorial, and distrust anyone who enters their territory. They live underground, and like eating giant spiders. Their breath weapon is a cone of high-pitched sound.

Topaz dragons are unfriendly, and do not like company. They live by the sea, but do not like water. They do however enjoy eating sea food. Their breath weapon is a cone of dehydration.

Platinum Dragons are the only Clan of Dragons that do not congregate in family groups. Platinum Dragons are not born to any one Clan. Occasionally, a special Dragon is born in a family group. The Dragon, instead of being the color of the Dragon Clan, is a steel gray with flecks of blue throughout and is wingless. This is a Platinum Dragon. These special Dragons are brought to the Great Monastery where the young Dragons are raised as priests. The Platinum Dragons are the only Dragons who can be priests. They are taught all the traditional rituals and mysteries and some are instucted in clerical miracles. Platinum Dragons often deal with humanoid races and even sponsored a group of human clerics who worship the Dragon gods. No human, however has ever ridden a Platinum Dragon. Platinum Dragons do not breathe fire; instead they create a cloud of gas that encircles their victim turning him to stone. Platinum Dragons ingest these stone statues in order to breathe this cloud again.

And Finally.. Spectral Dragons
There are only two families of Spectral Dragons, and only from these families may the King or Queen of Dragons be chosen. The Spectral Dragons are the Royal Dragons of all true Dragons, and they claim to be the leaders of all Clans. Spectral Dragons always have two or more heads and are the largest of all Dragons. The two headed Spectral Dragon breathes a different gas from each head. The two gases they breathe are poisonous to all life, but when the two heads breathe together in one concentrated cone, there is a chemical reaction between the two deadly gases that creates a horrible flame capable of burning other Dragons. While the flame is burning only by magical means may it be extinguished.

Dragon Types

Dragons are classified into five major Dragon Types and then categorized by color. Each in their own sense having Pros and Cons that work with and against the Dragon. The five types are as follows. Air. Earth. Fire and Chaos
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Air - Air Dragons are the third rarest of the four types of Elemental Dragons. Members of this breed belong to a race of Draconic beings. At times join forces with the dragons of fire and volcanoes, seas and other waters, mountains and forests, and chaos. Sometimes there is conflict of elemental powers, producing great atmospheric and environmental disturbances, but mostly the elementals work in harmony.
Pros: Air dragons are never selfish, always putting other first. They are loyal to friends and very caring. Air dragons are never judgemental before getting to know someone and are very open minded and sincere. They are often quite beautiful in appearance.
Cons: Air Dragons are very shy but and often keep their thoughts to themselves. They are gullible and sometimes quite slow.

Earth Dragons - Earth Dragons are very placid and wise, snakelike creatures. While these dragons are very judgemental, this can be helpful if you want to learn something about yourself. While in an earth dragons circle of judgement, the dragon will judge you or anyone who wishes to be judged. In this way they assist dragons of justice. As infants, earth dragons are often sent to act as guardians of the humans. Like humans, their parents never abandon them completely and encourage them to lead their own lives. They are also the most common of all the elemental dragons.
Pros: Mentally, they are very powerful and down to earth.
Cons: They think they are supreme to others, and can be quite cynical and rude.

Fire Dragons - Although Fire Dragons are not evil, they have short fuses and can be quite fierce when angered. They are impatient of beginners in the field of dragon magick and won't participate at all unless they feal the person is of equal power. However, if you can prove yourself worthy then fire dragons are very loyal friends dispite their arrogance. Fire dragons keep to themselves and don't usually circle with others and only lives with mates for they are quite cruel even to their own species. They are very competitive and territorial and hates any being that has a chance of overpowering it. They are the bullies of the dragon world but when they have a cause, they stick to it with an iron code.
Pros: They are experts in the field of combat and are the most physically powerful of the elemental dragons. They are honest and courageous.
Cons: They are very proud and think very low of others.

Water Dragons - These serpent-like creatures are helpful when it comes to emotions, whether its calming them or tearing down a barrier a stubborn human has put up. They represent calmness under all circumstance and keep events moving in a fluid manner. They can help us break free of our psychic vampires that control our emotions as well. These dragons have actually been sited in the physical world by many. One such famous dragon is the lock-ness monster. Although there are a select few that see others such as black dragons, air dragons and even a few fire dragons, water dragons are the most well documented of having taken residents in this plane of reality.
Pros: They are often the most beautiful and most magickally advanced.
Cons: They are VERY stubborn and at times snobby.

Chaos Dragons - While their title may create an image of evil and hate, these dragons represent something very different. While it is true they represent chaos, they represent chaos that is neccessary to resolve problems in which order and reasoning cannot. An example of this is when a nation overthrows a tyrant. They cannot reason with him, so chaos and force is neccessary. When working with them, they will go past your command and straight to the source of your problem. These dragons are often omens of catastrophe so if you see one in the sky or in your mind, GET AWAY! Although they are beings of chaos and catastrophe, the are not evil. Their life force can assist the magician, as long as you are very cautious.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These groups of Dragons are the most common forms, yet there are still a few miscellaenous dragons that need to be brought to attention. Such dragons are the Guardian Dragons (faerie), Wyvern, Hydrid, Vampiric and the Dead (Dracoliche).

The Guardian Dragons are adept at their tasks and quite skilled in fulfilling their charges. Remember that their place is to guard and keep secret, not to do anything else, and while they may try... success is not guaranteed. That comes from not following the hierarchy. Other tasks may be asked of other dragons for whom the task falls closest to their sphere of influence. Guardian Dragons may be called to serve for a brief period of time (length of a trip ) or for an indefinite time frame (length of a marriage). Guardian dragons are the most friendly of the species and the most fun-loving. Then enjoy simple impromptu rituals that include dancing, singing, and general fun. Simple, very relaxed rituals are an excellent was to introduce children into the field of ritual and getting acquainted with dragons. It is also a very good way for adults to unwind and release stress. These dragons are attracted to ginger and sweet-smelling and spicy incenses. They are greatly interested in divination and have a tendency to hang over your shoulder while you are reading cards or practicing crystal gazing, for instance. They are interested in stories, especially if the dragon in portrayed as powerful wily, and not defeated by mortals.

In heraldry the wyvern is a type of dragon, but this is not so in AD&D. The wyvern is a distant relative of the dragon. They are brown or grey, with orange or red eyes. They have a sting at the end of their tail. Wyverns are not very intelligent, and have no magical abilities or breath weapons. They are carnivores.

Chimera  (Hybrid)
The dragon parts of this creature are one of its heads, and its wings. The wings are brown-black, and the head is orange, with black eyes. It also has a lion and goat head. The front half of the body in of a lion, and the back half is of a goat. The dragon head has a flame breath weapon. Other dragon characteristics in behaviour include lairing in caves, and gathering a hoard. The chimera is not very intelligent, but can speak a simple form of the red dragon language.

Vampire Dragon - They appeared out of the first shadows cast on the haven.  Despite the stereotype, vampire dragons can be friendly...if they have fed recently.   Just as it's name speaks, Vampire dragons must consume the life force (pranic energy) from the blood of other dragons only to survive.  They can "feed" a minimum of once a month, and after that they begin to die.  Dragons do not die when they care fed off of by a vamp dragon, they are only VERY tired and dizzy for the next 12 hours.  Others bitten by vampire dragons will not turn into vampire dragons themselves. The sunlight will not harm them, but they are blind when underneath bright light.  All vampire dragons are either black, maroon, dark brown, or very dark grey with wing colors of either red, light brown, light gray, or deep purple.  There wings are very large, and they all have slit eyes like a cats.  True vampire dragons will have permanent blood-stained fangs from birth.  Give birth to live young.

Dead Dragons (Dracoliche) are just that. Dead dragons. They have no outstanding feature other then decoying flesh and bones. These dragons do not roam form but are infacted, summoned by powerful magicians to do their dirty work, as the Undead Dragons see not friend or foe, only the summoner. They destroy all living creatures within their path then return to which they came to rest once again in the after life. Dracolich are immuned to most all magic unless the caster is of the HIGHEST order.
