        The Writer's Life
        Book Room

Not much here yet -- I'm still working on this page.

I'm always on the lookout for good books on the craft of writing. I will say up front that I think writing is something you can't really learn out of a book, and there are plenty of good style manuals out there for the stuff that can be gleaned from a book. Once in a while, though, somebody writes something that is really helpful. Natalie Goldberg has produced just such a book with

        Writing Down the Bones:
        Freeing the Writer Within

Goldberg encourages giving free rein to the creative impulse, and she has lots of suggestions for coaxing it out of hiding. This book doesn't put much emphasis on form and style; rather, Goldberg suggests turning off the "inner editor" and letting whatever comes, come. A five-star read.
