One day, the always calm and peaceful woman, arrived home looking happier as ever and, at the same time, in complete restlessness. Every one was already waiting for her at the table for lunch: her husband, a nephew and two sons. True she was late. Any way, she was lucky to have now a good maid, who always rushed to help her in moments like these. The important thing was that the table was well set and lunch was already being served. So her presence hadn't been so necessary.
On that moment, she opened her bag, in front of all of them, fussed inside it and drew out a shining golden bracelet, craved with countless diamonds. She showed it to everyone and almost yelled, "Hey, everybody, look what I've found! Right on the sidewalk! I've taken it to the pawnbroker's and the clerk has guaranteed it's made of gold and all the diamonds are real!"
"Wow, mother, what do you mean?" says her youngest son, completely dazzled. "The other day you found a ring... And you said it was made of gold too..."
"Not to mention the amount of money you found on the street the other day," added her humble husband.
And the story of the woman who was always finding things took wings and flew over a long way down the street where she lived, arousing doubts and suspicion among her neighbors:
"This is too funny!... Such a strange story!" said a neighbor, his head full of doubts. "Why don't I ever find anything?"
"Neither do I. I wonder if the virtuous Amanda is part of a gang of robbers," insinuated another.
"Or is there a banker behind this?" asked an old lady, known as the biggest gossiper in the block.
And all her neighbors started building the most incredible insinuations in their minds about her.
In a beautiful afternoon, a warm breeze was blowing in a cloudless blue sky, raising a whirl of dust above the streets and houses.
Amanda invited an old woman who was a spinster to come and pray with her in a nearby church. She wanted to take her time to say some prayers and find some comfort in God. The old lady enjoyed the idea and accepted it promptly. They rushed to the church almost immediately.
While they were chatting on their way, the spinster screamed in surprise. There was a package lying on the floor. A beautiful package wrapped in a gleaming laminate gift wrap paper.
"Oh my God, a package!" she screamed. But we shouldn't pick it up! Maybe there is a bomb inside!"
"But... what are you talking about, Donata? A bomb in the middle of the street? There's no problem at all! Let's open it... here and now!"
So they did, aching in curiosity to know what the package had inside, to find a swath of cloth, a beautiful piece of imported silk.
"And now, Amanda, who does this beautiful silk belong to?"
"Why don't you keep it? This is the first time you find anything!"
So, Amanda's poor and naïve friend held in her hands, surely for the first time, a marvelous colored cut of rich silk.
When she came back home, Donata showed everybody what she had found. For this reason, some of them were convinced that, in fact, Donata's friend was a really lucky person, touching other people with her own good luck.
"Hum..." suspected one of the old neighbors. "She even drags the stupid Donata into this weird story!"
In a sunny afternoon, the woman who was able to find valuable objects and even money in the streets, was carelessly wetting her plants in her beautiful garden. Her eyes did not hide the glitter of her tricky actions. Suddenly, there came a man whistling, who she had known since she was a girl. He greeted her. She answered back and asked him about his new job and he answered, mockingly:
"Now I'm working for a pinchpenny Portuguese man. He doesn't give even a snack to his employees to eat. And as to the salary, you can well imagine... But, changing subjects, Amanda, I've heard of your lucky finds! Oh, if I were you! I would get the big prize in the lottery!"
She gave a broad smile, though feeling a little bit puzzled, as if the young man knew any of her well hidden secrets. The man waved goodbye and went on his way.
The following day, the young man arrived at work, whistling as usual. He saw the Portuguese man's wife in her husband's office. The old man wasn't there at that moment and he saw her looking through the drawers in his desk.
"God, what is this? This is so strange!" he thought.
He sat at his desk.
He didn't have anything to do with that. Nothing really! So he turned on his computer.
Unexpectedly, she grabbed the phone and called a person she knew. He happened to overhear the whole conversation. It was inevitable. He was in the room next door! And she didn't mind speaking aloud:
"Leonardo is such a reckless man. He lost all the jewelry that I'd asked him to take to the pawnbroker's. My bracelet, my ring... Even the interest from my savings' account. I'm broke, almost penniless."
The young man was really surprised. He linked the Portuguese wife's story to the things his neighbor had "found" in the streets.
"But this is impossible! Could it be true what I'm thinking of? Amanda and the old man... Now I remember what my granny used to say. What a wise woman! When a woman found one thing or a man lost something, she used to smile and say, knowingly: 'A woman who finds and a man who loses... Each of them so smart! Smart and deceivers," he completed, not holding back his great deception.
In that moment, the man's mind turned as fast as it could and started thinking. Soon, a devilish idea came to his mind.
"I'm going to take advantage of this situation! I'm going to say to this grumpy man that I know all the truth. So I can get a raise in this cheap office and, who knows, also a promotion! On the first chance I have, I'll get him! Oh, a man who loses, a woman who finds, each of them so smart! Smarter is the one who knows and acts on the behalf of this knowledge!
