SHEILA FABRE

LIVRO

Biography

With fifteen-year experience in the publishing area, Sheila Fabre is currently an editor in Pearson Education do Brasil. Born in São Paulo (capital city) on May 9, 1970, in her childhood she dedicated herself to olympic gimnastics and in her adolescence she took up ballet and contemporary dancing. When she was about to get her MEC (Ministry of Education and Culture) diploma, at the age of nineteen, she interrupted her body expression classes to pursue a college degree in Letters. In this new universe, she found her new passion, which – as opposed to dance, whose expression depends basically on a young body is – would get more and intense and which would be deeply influential in her building herself as a human being. Machado de Assis, Fernando Pessoa and Guimarães Rosa became her literature masters.

In 1990, during her undergraduate studies, she began teaching both in state and private schools. After she got her degree, she decided to learn more about the Portuguese language, which led her to do postgraduate studies. The following year, she decided to stop teaching and started working in publishing as a proof-reader in Siciliano Publishing House, where she had the chance to follow the natural path of a professional whose learning takes place gradually; she worked as a copy editor and then as an editing coordinator. At that time she learned about the fascinating world of what is backstage in the production of a book: the art of book publishing. This environment made it easier for her to be in touch with respected writers, and in 1995 she met Rachel de Queiroz and wrote the dust jacket of her book “Teatro”(“Theater”), re-published at that time.

In 2000, at the age of thirty, Sheila Fabre realized that the years of close observation of life events as well as the close contact with literature had led to write her own texts. In the same year she started publishing some of her short narratives in literature sites on the Internet, such as Kplus, a cultural community; from that moment on she decided to bring her texts together on the site www.sheilafabre.recantodasletras.com.br. Still in 2000 she became a columnist in the section “O Xis da Questão” (“The Crux of the Matter”) in Rio de Janeiro “Jornal Zona Oeste”, where she would debate a current and timeless issue: human conflicts.

Her short stories typically show characters living conflicting situations, caused by social and historic circumstances; they are meditative and restless, as they experience the inner and the outer side of events, which leads them to muse over life. This is how Sheila reveals what lies behind apparently trivial situations.
