Elizabeth
Thanks for your response to my query - Your suggestion that the Coats may have arrived via Adelaide proved to be correct and I now have a pretty good record of them.
Thanks
Peter

Based on shipping details and Vic Govt B,D& M records I've come up with the following info.

COATS and PRESSWOOD
John Coats, and Rebecca Presswood where both born in England. John was born in Wisbech in Cambridgeshire in 1828 to parents John Coats (farmer) and Sarah Coats (nee Swift). Rebecca was born in Clenchwarton, Norfolk in 1830 to parents John Presswood (farmer) Susan Presswood (nee Bemrose). John (22) and Rebecca married at (Kings) Lynn, Norfolk England in 1850. John and Rebecca sailed from Plymouth to South Australia on the barque AMAZON on the 26/11/1851 and arrived at Port Adelaide on 19/2/1852. 17 people died on the voyage out. They travelled to Australia with John Coats' parents - John(52) -Agr labourer and Sarah (50) and their other children Elizabeth(20) Josiah(19), Mary(17) Sarah(15) George(14), Charles(11) Alfred(8) NB on the passenger list Coats is spelt Coates.

I have not found any records pertaining to John Coats (elder) or his wife Sarah in Victoria. Perhaps they remained in South Australia.

John and Rebecca however travelled to Victoria and resided for a time at Campbells Creek where John worked as a Gold digger and their first set of twin daughters Rebecca and Susannah where born in September 1853, unfortunately both twins died at 3 months. Subsequently they moved to Rathscar near Avoca where they had another 9 children beginning with John (Jno Coates-SIC) in 1855 Fredrick (1857) William (1860) Alice Presswood Coats (1862)- (also at Rathscar), Married Andrew Glenn in 1882 Charles(1864), (Sarah and Mary) twins (1867) who both died in infancy Annie (1868) -Annie died at Laen aged 21 in 1889. Joseph(1871)- all registered at Avoca.

John Coats died 24/9/1874 aged 46 at Raglan after 22 years in Victoria and was buried at Moonambel Cemetery.

At the time of John's death in 1874, the family may have been residing Moonambel. By the time of her daughter Alice's marriage to Andrew Glen, in 1882, Rebecca had moved to Laen. Rebecca Coats nee Presswood died aged 75 on 5/5/1905 at North Laen after 53 years in Victoria and was buried at Donald cemetery.

Josiah - John's brother who also came out on the AMAZON appears to have married a Sarah Ellen Bemrose Kent in Australia and initially moved to Amherst and where they had a son John in 1854. All their subsequent children are registered at Avoca. A Sarah E Kent is listed as an 18 yo passenger on the AMAZON voyage that also brought out the Coats family. As Bemrose was Rebecca's mother's maiden name so possibly Sarah and Rebecca were cousins.
