William Leeder 2 June 1797 - 5 March 1845, born at Bury St. Edmunds, England, arrived in West Australia on 14 May 1830 per the 'Rockingham', with his wife Hannah Emily French 6 Oct 1797 - 7 Jan 1889, and five children
William Leeder began by selecting 88 acres on 14 Oct 1831 and 200 acres on 14 July 1832. He was employed in Perth as a Shoemaker, then in 1831 was granted fee simple title to "Leeder's Hotel" and later ran the "Freemason's Hotel".
William Leeder died 5 March 1845 at Perth of delirium tremens, aged 47.
Mrs Leeder took over the running of the hotel in Perth. In Feb 1848 she sent her son George to England per 'Merope' for schooling and he returned per 'Melope' from England in March 1849.
In March 1850 Mrs Leeder left for England per 'Mary'.

Your web page on William and Hannah Leeder was great to find and many thanks. My interest is through William’s sister Sophia Leader (I have still to find more documentation for absolute confirmation of this), however it is well known in our family.

I have a copy of my Great Great Grandmother Sophia’s record of marriage at Bury St Edmunds St James to James Scarfe (1824). Their son Robert Scarff , aged 19, came to Western Australia in 1851 with his Aunt Hannah widow of William Leeder. Hannah had returned to England to visit family

I also have a copy of William and Hannah’s record of marriage at Bury St Edmunds St James on which he signed his name William Leader. I wonder why he changed the spelling when he came to Western Australia?

My main reason for writing to you is to enquire whether any of the family knows the names of William’s parents as to date I have been unable to locate this information. I would be very grateful to receive any earlier history on this family.

I found that my wife is directly descended from 1. Hannah Eliza Leeder 6 Mar 1818, you have listed through her second marriage. This was to John Enoch Hammond on 7 Oct 1858 (Perth C/E). This marriage resulted in 4 children 1 Alice Matilda b. 1855, Jesse Elijah b.1856, Theophila Susannah b. 1859 and John Evatt ( not sure of bith day but was bp 11/8/1874 as an adult C/E). This I have found in the bicentennial dictionary of Western Australians edited by Rica Erikson.
My wife a great great Grand Daughter of Jesse Elijah.

The West Australian (about) Tuesday 11 July 1882 has a confirmation
A witness in a court case - John Enoch Hammond, a teamster, confirmed the evidence of the previous witness, but differed with him as to who served the beer, alleging that it was Mr. Love himself and not Mrs. Love-at least, that was his impression. It was a serious case in the Supreme court of Perth, Charles Lennard, a teamster, was charged with committing perjury, when giving evidence against Mr Love for selling liquor on Sunday. The whole story filled one and a half columns and resulted in Lennard being found guilty and given a year's imprisonment with hard labour.

I am particularly keen to know if any of the Leeder family had portraits taken by the Duryeas in particular do any daguerreotypes of the Leeder family exist whether known to have been taken by Sanford Duryea or not. If you could pass this query around the family members it would be much appreciated as I hope to produce a small book on the Duryeas eventually.
I am in touch with quite a few members of the family, mainly Townsend Duryea's descendants (Sanford's brother) although I have spoken to one Duryea Leeder descendant who lives in America.

10. James Batley Leeder 24 Dec 1837 - 12 Dec 1900, born in Perth, wed 24 Aug 1856 in Mt Barker, South Australia to Caroline Hancock 10 May 1839 - 28 Aug 1911. He is recorded as a passenger per 'Balclutha' returning from Perth to Adelaide 8 Jan 1861. The first three children were born in Adelaide, then the next five were born in West Australia, where James is recorded as a Perth gardener and farmer. About 1873 the family moved to the Dunolly-St Arnaud area, probably to assist Caroline's parents, and four more children were born.
