John and Ellen Mongan

A fellow passenger was Rev Charles Lovat (Pastor of Yass 1839-1849) who came, with excellent testimonials to Sydney on the 4th December 1837 on the ship "Hindoo". He on some missionary tours to the interior of the colony and hebecame known for a valuable ministry about Bathurst. He was with Bishop Polding in August 1838 when thefoundation stone of St Augustine's Yass was laid.

The "Hindoo" was built at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, in 1835, and originally owned by Daniel C. Bacon et al., of Boston. She measured 136 feet in length, 30 feet 6 inches in breadth, and 20 feet in depth; her tonnage is given variously as 580 or 580 1/2 tons. She was originally employed in the China and East India trade, where she was "fast and popular". I have record of only one voyage to the Far East: the maritime intelligence column in the New York Post for 25 February 1839 announced that the ship "Hindoo", [Charles] Pearson, master, had arrived at the port of New York the previous day ("since our last"), having sailed from Mantilla [presumably Manila, the Philippines] on 10 September 1838, and from St. Helena on 4 January 1839 [passenger manifest dated 25 Feb. 1839; National Archives Microfilm Publication M237, Roll 38, list #1839-402]; according to the passenger manifest, her port of call prior to Manila was Canton. The full-rigged ship "Hindoo", of Boston, Fitch, master, arrived at New Orleans on 14 January 1841 (the passenger manifest was signed the next day) from Havre; she cleared for Havre on 2 March 1841.

Gordon Victor Mongan b 1913 - d 1974 aged 60 son of George Mongan and Anna Chamberlain, married 1941 to Jean Isabel Osborn - this Jean Isabel Osborn is sister to William Bruce Osborn above and daughter to William Harold Osborn and Catherine Fletcher Beatty if you wished to add that to your Mongan section of site. Having been widowed since 1974 Jean Isabel Mongan nee Osborn remarried only about three years ago to Jeffrey Sutton who died this year, about May I think it was. Jean although completely blind is still alive and well
