Theos

Bernard Theos wed 1879 #3760 to Mathilda Beaupeurt. He died aged 42 from Bright's Disease 8 Oct 1887 and is buried in grave No 5309, Pleasant Creek Cemetry.

I am told Bernard Theos came from Le Havre, Calais, France to Victoria with Maurice Caneau (or Kaneau) and Monsieur Trouitt, who brought vine cuttings and set up the great Western Winery.
On 20 Oct 1992 I checked the 1884 Vic Trade Directory for supportive details. I found Jean Pierre Trouette and Emile Blampied are Vignerons of the Great Western at Stawell.
I then checked the Pioneers Index and found Jean Pierre Trouette wed Anne Blampied 1856 ref 1495. Jean Pierre died in 1885 aged 52 and his son Nicholas Bartholomy Trouette died aged 26 in 1886 #1665, when his mother's full name is given as Maria Francoise Blampied.

I found no mention of Kaneau (did not think of looking for Caneau).

Thompson

Unconfirmed details
Thomas Thompson was born 1843 at West Hartlepool, on the east coast at Tees Bay in Cleveland, UK. He was an engine driver on the local Stockton to Darlington train line and is said to have driven Stevenson's Rocket. He developed TB and migrated to the healthier climate of southern NSW, where he was employed as a customs officer, collecting excise on logs being floated to sawmills at Echuca or taken to Wilcannia by barges to be carried by wagons to Broken Hill for the mines. He died from pneumonia in 1877.

Thomas Thompson's association with trains led me to the story of England's first railway line and the first steam train.

In 1822, while planning a rail link from the Stockton coal mine to the Darlington port (about 10 miles), the directors decided to use steam instead of animal traction.
Robert Stephenson 1803 - 1859, the only son of George Stephenson 1781 - 1852, specialised in railway bridges, cuttings and tunnels.
Father and son first worked together in the survey for this line, which opened on 27 Sept 1825. The first public passenger steam train in the world was drawn by George Stephenson's engine called 'Active' and later renamed 'Locomotion', which is now preserved at bank Top station, Darlington.
The single-flue boiler design was improved to a multiple fire-tube boiler he used in the 'Rocket', which in 1829 won the Liverpool to Manchester contest and is now preserved in the Science Museum, London.
Engineers had new problems to solve - for example Blenkinsop's patent for fish-bellied rolled-iron edge rails replaced cast iron rails in 1829.

Selina Annie Smith was born 17 Mar 1856, eldest daughter of Miss Cook and William Smith who wed in 1854-5 and lived at Dunstable, Bedfordshire before migrating to Melbourne on the Duncastle in 1859 with their 3 daughters. In 1860 the mother and two younger girls died.

Thomas Thompson 1843 - 1877 wed second half of 1873 at Echuca ref 2546 to Selina Annie Smith 17 Mar 1856, the children were born at Moama.
3 Children 1. John Arthur Thompson 27 Sep 1874 wed Leonie Beaupeurt.
2. Walter Thompson 1876
3. Thomas Albert Thompson 1877
Selina was a highly respected nurse. She bought medical books and taught herself, so she would have a better understanding of the diseases she encountered - there were few doctors in inland towns.

Selina wed 1886 in Victoria ref 4497 to Thomas Holmes, who died in 1889. In 1888 the family moved to a homestead lease of 10,240 acres in the Western Division they called Wee Elwan. In an account probably written by Walter, 'we carried on. Each year we cleared several acres. My elder brother trained our homegrown steers to be a bullock team. We had about 3500 sheep in 1899, and leased land beyond Hillston. Then we lost all but about 800.'

From on Tue, 3 Jun 2003 and 12 Dec 2004
I have a photocopy from the parish registers (St Peter's, Dunstable, Bedfordshire) of the record of Selina Annie Smith's baptism (Apr 27 1856). Her parents were William Arnold Smith and Anne Cook.

I also have a photocopy from the Dunstable parish register of the marriage record for William Arnold Smith and Anne Cook (Jan 1 1854).

The history of the Smith/Cook side of the family is very interesting in its own right, but very hard to trace through the BMD records because of the common names involved!

12 Dec 2004 - We visited the Orange cemetery and tracked down a few Thompson graves, including Selina Annie's. At some point we intend cleaning it up and repainting the gold in the letters - the writing has almost completely vanished and is very hard to read.
