Minutes from March 20, 2003 Business Meeting

Altrusa International, Inc. of Montgomery, Alabama met on March 20, 2003 at the Sahara Restaurant with 11 members and 1 guest present. Liz Turnipseed, chairman of the Community Service Committee, introduced the guest speaker. Karen Sellers, Director of the Sunshine Center had a very interesting presentation. The Mission of the Center is to end family violence and foster hope and healing. Ms. Sellers gave a definition of all types of family violence and an outline of the services available at the Center. She also told of the new project called Exodus.

Business Meeting

President Kathy Alred called the meeting to order. New Member, B.J. Harris was introduced. Suzanne Marshall made a motion to accept the minutes as presented. The motion was seconded by Kay Miller and unanimously carried. Jo Coleman read the correspondence, the Call to Conference from Betty Mathieson. The treasurer's report was given by Kay Miller reflecting a balance as of March 20, 2003 in the General Fund of $291.02 and $392.96 in the Service Project Fund.

Melinda Walton, Chairman of the Information Committee, reported new members would be initiated at the April meeting. Doci Haslam, Chairman of the Nominations Committee, presented the slate of officers for the 2003/2004 club yeas as:

Vice President Mollie Kemp
Secretary Alexis McGhee
Treasurer Linda Haigler
Director, 1 Year Nell Sellers
Director, 2 Years Dawn Ellis

Doci Haslam made a motion to vote for the slate as presented. The motion was seconded by Joyce Cobb and unanimously carried.

Caroline Barmettler made a motion to sponsor two members to attend District Four Conference in Gatlinburg, Tennessee April 24, 25 and 26, 2003. Registration to be paid for each member and one night lodging for each attending plus mileage to Gatlinburg. The motion was seconded by Alice Douglass and unanimously carried. After a discussion, Melinda Walton volunteered to attend District Four Conference as a delegate and Jo Coleman will attend as an alternate. Caroline Barmettler made a motion to take the funds from the Service Project Fund and replace these funds from the proceeds of the Spring yard sale. The motion was seconded by Suzanne Marshall and unanimously carried. Kay Miller will donate a Brighton watch for the auction at Conference. Joyce Cobb made a motion to send $.75 per member for a gift for outgoing Governor, Scottie Harrell. The motion was seconded by Patsy Patton and unanimously carried.

Caroline Barmettler reminded the Club of Zoo Weekend, April 5 and 6, 2003. She asked members to let her know if they would like to volunteer. Doci Haslam advised members volunteers would be needed at the first Rivermarket Day.

After a brief discussion, the Spring Yard Sale was set for Saturday, May 3, 2003.

Joyce Cobb reported that Parisian was sponsoring a 2003 Charity Sale on April 26, 2003. As a fund raiser, members could sell tickets. Joyce will have more information at the April meeting.

Melinda Walton reminded members that April was birthday month for Altrusa. She asked each member to bring a birthday gift, such as umbrellas, raincoats, underwear, etc. to be given to the Sunshine Center to use as birthday gifts.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
