President's Pen What an outstanding speaker we had at our September meeting. Eleanor Lucas almost brought many of us to tears as she passionately spoke of the Aid to Inmate Mother's program at Julia Tutwiler Women's Prison and its impact on the lives of children. Mrs. Lucas' passion for the written word was an excellent choice as speaker for Literacy Month. I was proud to be a member of the Montgomery Altrusa Club when we voted to donate $100 to her program during our business meeting. We have lots to be proud of as Altrusans. I look forward to seeing each of you at our October 19th meeting. Kathy Fall Yard Sale Thanks to Nell Sellers and Dawn Ellis for chairing this fund-raiser. Thanks to everyone who braved the cold & windy day-including the shoppers! $672 was raised from this event. DID

October Program October speaker will be Anat Segal of Israel. Anat will tell us a little about Israel and will then be glad to answer any questions you might have so think about what you would like to ask. However, I urge you not to ask any politically sensitive questions in view of what is going on in Israel right now. Her husband is at Maxwell and is a fighter pilot in the Israeli Air Force. Anat's English is very good since she lived in New York City from the ages of 5 to 10 and then returned when she was 17 and went back and forth between New York and Israel for the next four years. September Program The Literacy Committee certainly did a good job in bringing Eleanor Lucas to our club to speak to us about Aid to Inmate Mothers. She was a WONDERFUL speaker. Teresa White told me (Kathy) the next day that when Eleanor said she could not bring those mothers into the room with us she was wrong she did just that. POWERFUL! I'm glad our club voted to contribute $100 to such a worth cause. Cruise Raffle Proceeds At the September meeting, the club voted to donate our proceeds from the Cruise Raffle to the Success by Six program here in Montgomery. You might remember that we had a speaker from this program a year or so ago. We also donated a new hardback book for each student in the program two Christmas' ago. This is a very worthy program and will use our donation wisely. Our club made a good choice in our selection of a program to support. Fund Raising Meeting The Fund Raising Committee met on Tuesday, October 3rd to discuss the Cruise Raffle Fund Raiser. They will be providing information to all members at the October meeting. If you have any thoughts on this Fund Raiser, please contact Ashley Thomas. Silent Auction Each committee will provide one gift for our Silent Auction at the Altrusa Christmas Party on December 7th at Bob and Kathy Alred's home. The committees providing gifts will be the Altrusa Information, Community Service, Literacy, International and Fund Raising. All committee chairs have been contacted, but if you have not been contacted, please give your committee chair a call. The club voted in September to donate the funds raised from the Silent Auction to the Child Protect program. Historic Highlights 1944: Grants-in-Aid

Member News and Concerns Our thoughts are with Doci Haslem who lost her sister recently. Congratulations to Doci Haslem on her daughter Beth's marriage in September. Beth and her new husband will be living in London since Beth is responsible for Coca Cola's Burger King European business. Amy Creel recently started back to school at Faulkner to work on her degree in Human Resources. She will be juggling work, home, children, husband and school for the next 14 months. Good luck, Amy! Katie & Todd Rotton just celebrated their 4th wedding anniversary. Katie's grandmother (who has Alzheimer's) also celebrated her 82nd birthday and seems to be doing okay-considering.
