September 21st Capital City Club 5:45 PM Dinner Parking is available on the street or in the parking deck across the street from the RSA Tower. Hope to see you there! Treasurer's
Report Balance as of General
Fund - $ 932.60 From the
President's Pen Hope that everyone had a safe and fun Labor Day. To reflect on Labor Day, I wanted to let everyone know that we will be having our "New Member Tea" in February this year rather than in May so we need to start working (Laboring) on our invitation list. This will allow us time to get our new members into the yearbook in plenty of time to have the yearbook to members by June, which is when the new club year begins. Begin thinking of professional women you work with, attend church with, or just live in the same neighborhood with who would be good additions to our club. It would be great to bring in at least 5 new members this year. Hope to see everyone at our September meeting - we will be voting on the organization that will benefit from our Cruise raffle. See you at the Laboring Place on September 21st. Kathy Fall
Yard Sale Thanks to Nell Sellers and Dawn Ellis for chairing this fund-raiser. Please call Dawn Ellis at the numbers below to sign up for a shift to work on yard sale day. If you need to drop off items for the yard sale, contact Dawn after September 25th. There will be advertising flyers at the September meeting. These flyers really help get the word out so grab a few and place in your grocery store or another high traffic area. Dawn 396-0219 (h) 613-2294 (w) Altrusa

September Program Our club will be selecting one of the following charities to support with our upcoming Cruise Raffle. They are Child Protect, Alabama Harvest or Success by Six. Please try to attend this meeting so we can have as many members as possible approve our choice of charities to support. "Highlighting
Literacy" Let's take a minute and review an average day. If you could not read, how would you cope? Can you imagine the confusion and frustration; how difficult simple things would become. For those of you who love reading, who have been fortunate enough to have been brought up with books, whose greatest pleasure is to curl up with the latest book by your favorite author, can you imagine what it is like never to have red even the shortest of stories? You open doors when you open books . . . doors that swing wide to unlimited horizons of knowledge, wisdom and inspiration that will enlarge the dimensions of your life. Our society is increasing being shaped by large amounts of information and knowledge. To live and prosper in this society, all Americans must become lifelong learners, building knowledge and skills that can sustain their lives at work, at home and in their communities. Yet a recent survey by the National Center on Adult Literacy show that more than 20% of adults read at or below a fifth grade level-far below the level needed to earn a living wage. Over 40 million Americans age 16 and older have significant literacy needs. Historically, Altrusa has been involved in literacy activities for many years. Many Clubs have well-developed programs and projects for literacy. Every member can contribute to a literacy project in a meaningful and rewarding manner. I encourage you to work with other organizations within your community to further the cause for literacy. INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY-SEPTEMBER 8, 2000-is a day to focus our attention on the problem of illiteracy and what we, as Altrusans, can do to improve literacy skills. In 1993 Altrusa established the Letha H. Brown Literacy Award to honor past International President Brown who introduced literacy as a major emphasis for community service for Altrusa Clubs. The objective of the Letha H. Brown Literacy Award is to stimulate local club interest in developing an active literacy project to serve their community; to create awareness of Altrusa and its commitment to literacy; to encourage members of local clubs to actively participate in literacy projects designed to meet specific community needs; and to recognize outstanding club achievement in literacy projects. If your club has not already planned a literacy project for this year, the month of September would be a good time to start, and then don't forget to complete an entry for the Letha H. Brown Award to receive recognition for this project. February 14, 2001, (deadline for submitting entries to the District Service Chair for the Literacy Award) would be a really special day if the District Four Service Chair received an entry form for this prestigious award from every Club! Let's read to lead . . . read to grow! Della Ledford |
Member News and Concerns The Yearbooks have been put together for another year. Thanks to Kathy Alred for making the necessary changes to update information, Ashley Thomas for proofing the finished product and to Nell Sellers for binding them again for us this year. Copies were sent to our District Governor, Wilarlie Barto and she had sent several changes in District Officer's addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses. Copies have been sent to our Emeritus members. Kathy will also have copies at the September meeting for you to pick up. Kathy Alred's husband, Bob, spent the first week of September at Pebble Beach playing golf with seven of his golf buds and then drove to LA to attend the Alabama game. The golf was fun - the game was not. Wendy and Chris Amos will be leaving September 17th for a week in Hawaii. District Four News Wendy Amos and Robin Jones will represent our Altrusa Club by attending the Altrusa International "Leadership in Community" training on October 7th in Birmingham, Alabama. We will be well represented and look forward to hearing about the training at our October meeting.
