MAKING BARELLS: Eppo's Tip: Many bodyboarders think that once you get inside a tube you stay in the same body position throughout With a fast wave like Kirra you have to draw a speed line. Bottom turn up into the section it's going to barrel and hold your edge. As the lip throws, build your momentum by driving your board up and down inside the tube. This will increase your speed as well as the odds of making it out. Keep your eyes fixed on the tube opening at all times and work your board towards the daylight. In some deep barrels you often encounter what's known as the shockwave. The shocky is the whitewater explosion created by the lip as it hits the wave's surface and causes whitewater to form inside the tube as well as outside. It's possible to ride the shockwave, which can give you the added speed you might need to make it out of an extremely deep tube. Tube riding is all about experience as no two tubes are ever the same. The more tubes you ride, the more you will develop your skill for making them. STEP BY STEP 1. It's sometimes necessary to stall to set up the tube. This can be achieved by pulling up on the nose of your board. 2. Dragging your flippers can get you the same result. 3. Timing your bottom turn correctly will set you up for the tube. 4. Once inside, try to keep your eyes open at all times. 5. To gain speed inside a tube, arch your back and slide your bodyweight forward towards the nose. from Bodyboarding Hot Tips and Maneuvres No. 3

THE EL ROLLO Eppo's Tip: When learning to do the el rollo, try not to roll too far into the flats. The best time to attempt this move is when you're in the tube or pocket of the wave. Aim for the lip of the wave and let the lip throw you over. Don't force the roll, just flow with the wave. Once you get past vertical, the throwing lip should do the majority of the work. If you're having troubles when landing and are losing your speed, you're not hitting the lip at the right spot. You need to come back at least 2ft further inside on the face. The more vertical the face of the wave, the easier it is to roll. STEP BY STEP 1. Know which section of the wave you want to hit. 2. Power off the bottom of the wave and hit the lip. 3. Begin your roll by letting the lip motion do most of the work. 4. As you begin to drop, look for a good place to land. Don't go too far out into the flats. 5. Once you land flat on your board, recentre your weight and try to get back onto the wave's face. from Bodyboarding Hot Tips and Maneuvres No. 3

DROP KNEE: Joslin's Tip STEP BY STEP 1. Ride your board to a good open section of wave. 2. Pull yourself way up onto your board. 3. Slide your knees up onto the board beneath you, but swing the leg on the same side as the wave up and forward, and set your foot down on the nose. Do all this in nearly one smooth motion and without setting the weight of your knees down on the board. 4. Set your weight down and release your hands from the board. You now have one foot and one knee down on the board. This is the drop-knee position. 5. Steer by leaning to engage or disengage your wave-side rail from the wave. 6. Put your hands back on the board and slide your feet back to continue riding in normal position. Tips: >It's easier to get your foot forward with smaller fins. It's even easier with no fins at all, but for the sake of everything else, it's best to just learn with them on. >Practice getting into the drop-knee position on the beach before you try it on the wave. The faster you can do it, the easier it will be.
